Tony's teachings scares me.

Did not know of his changes - it's been many years since I heard him, but he was a powerful intellectual voice for evangelical thought, a rarity at any time!

Thanks for the heads up.

p.s. I don't drink coffee or soda of any sort (remember, my wife's a Naturopathic Doctor) so can't blame caffeine on the accusation that I was "harsh". But I reread my post and didn't see anything even remotely harsh. Guess it is in the perception.

In the words of Steve Brown, "I love Tony Campolo but I don't agree with him on anything except Jesus".

My mother is professor of sociology at Widener U. and Rowan U. (formerly Glassboro State) and former profeesor at Philadelphia Community College so she knows Tony Campolo personally.

I've gotten to talk at length to Tony many times throgh my mother and I've got to tell you, he's one of the nicest people you'd ever meet.

Tony's very far to the political left but he's no socialist and certainly not anti-American.

I'm pretty familiar with his philosphy (not to say that I might not have missed something somwhere) but where sis he say that he didn't believe in eternl security?

One and the same. He was Prof of Homiletics at Southwestern Seminary and an excellent pulpiteer.

His sojourn at our church (First Baptistin Dallas) was cut short by a major problem facing many churches - the retired senior pastor would not yield control to the new man. I loved Dr. Criswell, but by staying on with a new pastor, de facto undermined the new man's ability to rule the church.

Then there were other problems. Not even sure where Dr. Gregory is presently.

I'll do like Dr. Bob and just go with the ones I've "heard." These are not necessarily in rank order. Also not all of these are preachers in the typical pulpit sense, though most are. Lastly, they are "A" favorite for different reasons, not because they are all equally good expositors the Word, thus the diversity of the list.

Only CorpseNoMore would list his favorite preachers while simultaneously and helpfully providing links to their websites.

Gotta love him. [IMG]

Thanks Liz for the thumbs up! Most of the LINKs I provided were not necessarily the primary web-site of the individual in question. Rather they were LINKs where one can either hear or read sermons/messages by these persons. The exception being John T. Gallagher, who WAS a candidate for the pastorate at my former church. Our church didn't take him, and he went to the one at the LINK. He is a great preacher, our pulpit committee blew it.

thanks again,

CNM

Maybe we should change his handle to "Babe'nthewoods"

I have never been privileged to hear Dr. C, but hope to - have a cruise leaving San Diego on Easter Sunday and may come if they offer a Sunrise Service and free breakfast.

And you know which of those two will be the real "draw".

Here are my favorite preachers.

(1) Bro. Eric Capaci
(2) Dr. Bob Smith (My Pastor)
(3) Bro. Todd Lasseter (Asistant Pastor)
(4) Dr. Jack Hyles
(5) Dr. Ron Gearis

Those are all my favories on the grounds that they are the most truthful-from-the-Bible-tell-it-like-it-is preachers I know. And I know there are more.

1 - Barbara Brown Taylor
2 - Frederick Buechner
3 - John Claypool
4 - Fred Craddock
5 - Paul Duke
6 - Harry Emerson Fosdick

9 - Walter Brueggemann
10 - David Buttrick (accidentally put his Dad George earlier)

Joshua - I have to say that apart from the notorious liberal Fosdick, I did not recognize a single person on your list! We must run in awfully different circles.

Are any of them "baptist"? Visited the magnificent Riverside Church in NYC and know that Fosdick changed that from Baptist after the Rockerfellers had poured in 26 million.

Every one of us have our own "crowd" of speakers, evangelist, denominational officials, etc with which we feel comfortable. What "crowd" are these?

Thanks for the information.

Fosdick is the only one you've heard of? Wow, I think the top four all did the Lyman Beecher lectures at Yale. I'll try to bio them as I can:

Barbara Brown Taylor - Episcopal priest with several published sermon collections and a book on preaching. Did the Beecher lectures (among many others), and was listed by Newsweek (or was that U.S. News?) as one of the ten most influential preachers in the country.

Frederick Buechner - You've really never heard of him?? He's one of the contemporary seminary staples. Presbyterian (I believe) and the author of several bestselling books. Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC's is one of the most famous. Pretty sure he did the Beecher lectures.

John Claypool - Baptist who became an Episcopal priest. Did the Beecher lectures and is extremely well-published in and out of homiletics (he also writes on pastoral care).

Fred Craddock - Disciples of Christ. Beecher lecturer. Professor Emeritus at Emory and worte a phenomenal textbook on preaching (among other excellent publications).

Paul Duke - Baptist. Former Professor of Homiletics and NT at McAfee in Atlanta; now at First Ann Arbor. He only has a couple of published books, but is writing the new Smyth & Helwys commentary on John.

Harry Emerson Fosdick - Him you know.

Christi Sanders-Huskison - Wouldn't expect you to know her, but someday you will. She's local (Georgia) but incredibly talented. Baptist (M.Div. from SBTS in Louisville).

Dock Hollingsworth - Also baptist and also local. I don't know if he'll ever publish, but he should.

Walter Brueggemann - Again...you've never heard of him? United Church of Christ and a professor at Columbia here in Atlanta. I think he may have done the Beecher lectures, but regardless he's one of the most respected OT scholars out there. He wrote Finally Comes the Poet.

David Buttrick (accidentally put his Dad George earlier) - Professor at Vanderbilt Divinity School. I think he's a baptist, but I'm not sure.

I really thought this was a fairly generic list other than my two locals. Then again, I barely recognized most of the names on the other lists. I'm starting to understand that we moderate-to-liberal baptists travel in very different circles from conservative-to-fundamentalist ones.

My guess is that you could define it as the "mainstream Protestant seminary educated humanities person" list. Certainly, any time I meet colleagues who are Duke, Vandy, Emory, Columbia, Union, etc. grads; these are the preachers we talk about.

Were we supposed to limit our lists to baptists?

Well, I'm a staunch conservative SBC pastor and maybe I'm a radical, but I have read or heard most of these. Dr. Bob may seek to censure me now
In all seriousness, while I wouldn't necessarily agree with their theology, Craddock, Claypool, and Buttrick left serious contributions to the field of homiletics (Though I prefer Clyde Fant who is often associated with this group). Craig Loscalzo, formerly of SBTS in Louisville, studied during sabbatical under Craddock and Buttrick, if my memory serves me correctly.
