Thanks for the quote. I have seen it quoted before, but I've never read the original source as far as I can remember.

By the way, the Supreme Court has ruled a lot of stupid things. They may or may not be correct, or they may or may not have been correct about the past. But the Supreme Court is a pretty crummy resource for objective truth.

I attended BJU between 1993-1995 and I am also half Korean so the dating policy did affect me to a degree. However, I was well aware of the situation before I attended.

While there, I heard all the negative stories and quotes mentioned in this thread, and by all accounts, most are probably true.

Bob Jones, Sr was raised in the backwoods of Tennessee in the early 1900's. I doubt you would find many from that era and from that region who were not racist.

I am not saying that to excuse him as a racist. I compare it to the fore fathers of our country. Was is bad that many, if not all, owned slaves? Yes. Is it unexpected? Not really.

His legacy lives on, however, and hopefully it continues to produce strong, educated Christians. It was my pleasure to learn from some excellent, Godly teachers and to make many wonderful friends.

BJU is definately not perfect, and I am critical of some of their ways, but it is a good school and I do not regret any of the time I spent there.

One final note, the school encouraged students to participate in outreach programs within the community and many of the programs targeted inner city areas.

Thank you. It is nice to hear a balanced and understanding opinion about Dr. Jones and BJU.

There was a close connection between Toronto Baptist Seminary, Jarvis Street Baptist Church, in Toronto and the good doctors, Sr and Jr. I heard them both preach a number of times, and they were always quite sound in their message.

On the question of racism, I fear there are a lot of red cheeks around. England had, and has, its share of racism. My grandfather would chase a Catholic up the street with his cane because he was Irish. Then he would turn to us to deliver pies to his family because they must be hungry.

When I went to Bible College in 1946, we were taught about the three sons of Noah, and how all the races were in the three sons,,,,,,including the Black race which was destined to the slave nations of the world. This theology continued in the church in South Africa until recent years. Not all racism was in the USA South.

    Cheers, and again, thank you.

From my contact with the Jones' (Jr and III) and graduates of BJU, I can make these few observations. Dr. Bob, Sr. was a man of at least three generations gone past. He was a lion of the Faith. But he was also a man of his times. The South until his later years was subject to Jim Crow segregation  . And that was the way things were [IMG] .
The old dating rules were developed not because of any black/white relationships. They were developed because, back in the Fifties a student from Taiwan (ROC) married an American. The Taiwanese parents had a hissy fit. And the school set up "the rules" (Back then "Negros" were not admitted to BJU.) It is also worth noting that BJU and its sister schools looks at itself as standing in loco parentis. (Again remember for much of BJU's life the age of majority was 21 not 18.) So, many of its rules reflect the mores of the parents sending off their still minor children.

Every other school was wrong, as I said in my post. And the "long before" was a matter of several years. As for civil disobedience and what you believe, it is a documented fact from Jones Sr and Jr that that was the case. I can only assume you are uninformed on that matter.

Who is the young man who was expelled in 2000? I would be interested to know his name. I can probably find out whether or not you have told the whole story here. I am quite sure that it is likely you have not. But I will be glad to check into it for you.
    </font>[/QUOTE]Dear Pastor Larry,
I almost did not respond because I do not care for the tone of your post. Other than a name, I have related the facts as I know them. It is up to you whether or not you consider me a reliable source. I have strong confidence in my source.

I have given you enough information for you already to check into it with your BJU contacts.
I do not intend to give the name of someone to you and violate his privacy. And I have never met you.
Your sources need to be careful lest they break confidentiality laws.

I think this thread has established who the Bob Jones often mentioned is, and we are branching off into other fields, such as segregation and what the BJU is or is not.

I am closing this site. Another thread can be opened under a different topic for those interested.

Cheers, and thank you all for your contributions.
