But WHY did the Alexandrian NASb refuse to transcribe the Scriptural truth already stated in 1st Chronicles 20:5??????????

Goliath may have been a fifth?

My Bible says only 4 sons.

2 Samuel 21:22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

The transcription error is quite easy to explain by considering that ארגים (oregim), which is translated "weavers," has been misscopied from one line into the other; and that בית הלחמי (beith hallachmi), the Beth-lehemite, is corrupted from את לחמי (eth Lachmi). When such a transcription error is accounted for the reading here will be the same as in Chronicles.

The KJV translators seemed to understand that and corrected the transcription error. When they supplied the missing "the brother of" they also placed an * in the text with a note which reads, "See I. Chro. 20.5."

yes. 1 Corinthians 20:5 interprets or clarifies 2 Samuel 21:19.

There were four giants. 3 are named, the fourth is not named and cannot be the one killed by Elhanan.

Trying to follow, and I need a little help, here from Askjo. I know very well what the "KJV" is; [IMG] I know very well what the "NASB" is; [IMG] but what exactly is "JW bible"? The closest thing I could think of is what is known as "The Jerusalem Bible", which I don't happen to have. Is that it??
    Thanks,
    Ed

The New World Translation (NWT) is the Jehovah's Witnesses (JW's) Bible.

I have no problem with the KJV translators insertion of "the brother of" here to make it consistant with the 1 Chronicles passage.

What about one of the 4 sons of Goliath being also a brother?

I think the way English bibles handled this problem is fine. It's one of those verses that we will not know the answer to this question while on earth. I have found its best just to accept what the Scriptures say and move on. Either way a giant was killed.

I have no problem with the KJV & NKJV adding the words "the brother of" to the text.

I don't have a problem with a marginal note the way the NASB and NIV handles this issue.

So I guess we are all back to where we started! [IMG]

    My understanding is this:

Goliath is not the first name ,but the family name.
This happens often in other culture, in Asia and in Middle East too. Calling the first name of the father is often prohibited, Calling the first name of the Generals is often prohibited. Calling the Name of God is absolutely prohibited and therefore, Israelites call God as HaShem ( The Name) or simply LORD.

Now when we see Genesis 20 we find the name of the Philistine King is Abimelech, then we read the King of Philistine at the time of Isaac was also Abimelch as well, in Gen 26. This is because Abimelech is not the name of the person but the name of the Title.

Goliath in 1 Sam 17 was killed by David.( 17:51)
2 Sam 21:19 is believed to be another brother of the Goliath family. 1 Chron 20:5 mentions the first name of the Goliath, as Lahmi. KJV reflected 1 Chron 20:5 into 2 Sam 21:19 in order to avoid the confusion or disbelief. Therefore there is nothing wrong with KJV, IMO.

I don't think the full name of Goliath was known to Israel at the beginning. What is the fist name of President Eisenhower is unknown to many people. Sometimes it may be spelled as Eisenhauer too. ( I am confused)

She was a blonde hottie....but I believe young Ike was going bald like Daddy...but I have no room to talk, as I shave my head.

I believe Eliyahu has hit upon at least part of the answer about Goliath if not all of it.
