Well, the average European did have a small number of brown, crumbling teeth interspersed with large empty spaces of gum, breath that could suffocate small animals, had maybe one change of clothes worn a week at a time, bathed a few times a year, was covered in lice and fleas, and changed the baby's diaper about once every two or three days. So, in general, yes, I'd say they were revolting. One wonders whether they even had a sense of smell.

What amazes me is that shampoo as we know it wasn't invented until the mid-20th century.

BTW, the British commented on the intact white teeth of American colonists.

Isn't that why they doused themselves with perfume - hence the term "French Bath?"

Dr. Bob - what started out to be an excellent topic - has degenerated into a quagmire of terrible jokes!!!

So, any HOPE of getting the train back on the tracks?

Did the allied nations, via the Treaty of Versailles, actually CAUSE World War II?

Was Germany's advance on Poland the ultimate "knee jerk" reaction?

I'll answer this in three parts.

One poster laid the blame at the feet of Wooodrow Wilson. That is not to far off the mark. The ruineous (though not unprecedented) reparations imposed on the Germans were one issue. As noted the reparations were not unprecedented, other defeated countries have survived such terms of surrender. However, tied to these ruinous terms was Wilson's visions of "national self-determination" and democracy. The first formed the basis for the breaking up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the foundation of Yugoslavia and Czechosovlakia. The second formed the basis for the deposing of the royal and imperial houses of Hohenzolleren and Hapsburg. Taken together, Wilson's visons opened the way for the rise of Hitler and his henchmen. Once Herr Hitler got the bit in his teeth there was no stopping him.

The second factor as I see it was insistence on the total surrender of the German Empire by France and Great Britain. If the French and British had been willing to settle for a negoiated peace, they would not have pressured the Russians to stay in the war after the czar had been deposed. If the Russian Provisional Government had made peace with the Germans and Austrians, the Germans may not have sent Lenin back to Russia from his exile in Switzerland. No second Leninist-Bolshivik revolution, that much less pressure on the political fabric in Germany, Italy, and Spain.

And now for the Empire of Japan, their problem was they tried to Westernize and learned the wrong lessons. Just as the sun was setting on the British and French Empires, the Japanese came to believe that they also needed to have an overseas empire. They started to militarily set up their "India and Africa" in China fifty years too late.
