    He was a US Senator elected in 1863 - From Virginia!

    Why would Va have elected a Senator to the US Senator during the War Between the States?

    Bowden was Senator # 603

    He was a member of the Unionist Party, which only lasted about six or eight years. It was anti-secessionist. He was elected to the seat in the U.S. Senate by Virginians who opposed secession. He apparently only served in Washington for one year.
