Ofcourse the real reason the Americans despise the French is that whenever the US feels the need to bully a country to get something, countries normally swallow their pride.
French diplomats when put in such a situation on the other hand, have the unfortunate tendency to point out that the family trees of all US presidents seem to include barnyard animals for some reason.

We all have barnyard animals in our family trees, at least here in the USA. I have a hard time believing that the French would have given up their financial dealing with Saddam if only we were more diplomatic in how we asked them to join us.

Aren't you glad that we bullied the Nazi's in WWII? YOUR OWN FLAG would be a swaztika if it weren't for us.

You mean the johnny-come-latelies??? I beleive that the French Underground, the Brits and the Canadians were there from 1939..a few years before the Yanks showed up in the UK even before they went to Europe....We are thankful for the assistance, but I do believe there was a lot of war before then.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Afraid this innocent (I thought) question would raise a stink. I actually don't see the "hate" as much as MUTUAL DISDAIN.

Let's be kewl with the French jokes. A European asked an American why and I ventured a response. We ALL have different opinions.

Of course mine are tres bien, phu.

Oh, btw, on a trip to the Middle East with 25 college kids (tell me THAT isn't a challenge) we had a few hours in Charles DeGaule Airport near Paris.

One of our girls (blonde) bought a lovely scarf at an airport gift shop. Then, an hour later, when boarding the L1011 for Tel Aviv, realized she was MISSING HER PASSPORT.

I raced with her back to retrace her steps . . and a sweet French shopgirl smiled as we came up to her . . and handed us the missing passport! She had found it on the counter and just knew we'd be back!

We raced back (after I gave the gal a 10-franc coin as a thank you) and they were waiting the plane for us.

So my last experience in France was hectic BUT a blessing to meet a lovely, honest French sales clerk.

I'm an American and I don't hate Canada. In fact I will hopefully be on a mission trip to Toronto summer 2004, and my family is planning a family reunion/fishing trip (and no we are not originally from Canada) to Canada in 2004.

Let's do a poll to get a count of the number of American BB users who say that they hate Canada and/or Canadians. What do ya think?

    Ah yeah, but...

You all were losing the war and about to taking German lessons when we arrived to bail you out for the second time in just over twenty years. Don't get me wrong the Brits made a grand stand and I love to read about that dark and lonsome period in their history. Churchill! What a man!

This is a bit of an insult to the millions of Frenchmen who lost their lives in WW1 (and had already lost their lives when the Americans deceided they could be bothered to muck in),especially to the men of Maunoury's French Sixth Army who did very successfully defend Paris in September 1914.

    Yours in Christ

Ah yes, Jim, at Normandy, their are Canadian and British graves as well. BUT, I believe this to be true, that without U.S. intervention, the Nazis would have defeated the Allies. From '39 on, it is as you say. But the war was going badly. To say "we are thankful for the assistance," almost sounds like we went over and 'helped-out', when in fact, WE ran the war, AND won it. Can you say "Eisenhauer"? I knew you could! [IMG]

Insult? You're right! And I don't apologize one-bit. The insult to America is far-greater than my 'little-joke'. Thousands of 'our boys' gave their life-blood for French freedom. And the 'thanks' we've received in return? Very little. And certainly, the corrupt French gov't of today wasn't interested in being an 'ally' of the U.S. (or Great Britain either, who lost thousands to liberate France), no, they were more-interested in keeping 'the pump primed' with Iraqi dollars. Don't talk to me about 'insult'. The French have defined the word.

    Jude,

At least there is proof that Archipppus' original question was justified.

    How about this?

The French rescued us in 1781.
The US rescued France (I will concede that point for argument's sake)in 1945.

    Doesn't that make us even?

Beside, based on your points, would you really want a cowardly Frenchman fighting alongside the uniquely brave US troops? Perhaps the US were better off without a bunch of surrender happy wimps?
