    So don't ask me Hank
    why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs you wrote?
    Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
    It's a family tradition!

So funny tonight. I was at church for our Christmas Eve service and when I got back to the sound booth after seeing some people, there was a bottle that looked like a small bottle of wine at my purse. I was so confused until I read the label and found out it was fine olive oil. LOL I'll drink to that! EWWWWW!!!!

This last paragraph speaks of my husband at the first and me at the end (minus the drinking). Have you learned to cope somehow?

I drink alchohol because it makes me feel soooo much better.

I'm talking about over the counter cough medicine when I have a coughing cold of some sort.

I understand they have a small percentage of alchohol in them. Thats the only alchohol this guy has any interest in.

....and believe me, in my pre Christ years I did waaaaaaay more then alchohol.

Thank you Jesus for your power to deliver us from these things! :jesus:

    Matt,

Let me share how I quit cigarettes. (I was a Marlboro man)

After being born of the Spirit I was immedietly freed from all the reefer and drugs I used to enjoy, bu I still smoked cigs.

After a while I found myself wanting to quit the cigs, but it would only last about a day or 2. I would always ask God to help me, but the cravings and nicotine fits would be so strong. I would always go back to them. I tried several times but would always go back.

Well, finally I decided to change my tact. I went to God in prayer and basically said....

"God, I've tried quiting with your help but I always go back. So, now I'm just going to ask you to deliver me from these things. Please DELIVER from them, Lord. Simply take them away. In Jesus name, Amen"

Then I went on smoking! But I meant every word of my prayer.

A few weeks after that I was sitting at home enjoying a smoke. And this thought came into my mind....

"Why I am smoking? This makes no sense. I asked God to deliver me, so He will. That means I'm a non smoker. So...WHY am I smoking, when I am a NON SMOKER???"

At that point I snuffed out that last ciggarette and have never had one since. That was almost 20 years ago. And get this.

I NEVER HAD ONE SINGLE NICOTINE FIT AFTER AFTER QUITTING THAT TIME.

No terrible cravings at all. Not a one.

    I had been....DELIVERED!

    God is soooo good!

I think I'm the first person to check "Because I'm used to it." I chose this category because it embraces several of the other reasons given and can best be summed up as "Because I enjoy it." I drink for the same reason I play golf, for the same reason I eat chocolate, for the same reason I drink coffee, for the same reason I watch old movies. None of these is a particlarly necessary activity but none is harmful if done in moderation. I have not come even close to being drunk since my college days and I find drunk people very annoying. Fortunately I rarely encounter one.

I enjoy going to dinner with friends and sharing a bottle of wine. I enjoy relaxing with a cold beer in the office after everyone has gone home (I own the office so I'm not breaking any rules). I enjoy sipping from a flask of bourbon or brandy on a cold day.

As for my Christian witness, I think Baptist Believer said it best. If abstaining from alcohol were something Christians should do, yes it would affect my witness. But it is not. In my place of work, I am regarded as the Christian guru and people are often surprised when I tell them that the Bible does not forbid drinking. I am quick to add that it does forbid getting drunk and if that is a problem for you, don't drink.

One more reason I drink that I just thought of--my physician says it is therapeutic for coronary artery disease.

I do drink.... because its fun. Not to excess you understand, but, living in wine-making country down on the central-coast of California, there are weeks' worth of interesting wineries to explore (some have caverns to store their barrels in), good wines to taste (you really can just taste, and spit it out after), and wine-makers to meet...

In fact, one of my best friends, and most sincere prayer partners, is a wine-maker. Actually a "viticulturist", which means he grows the grapes. But he also makes his own from time to time, bottles it, and sends it along to me. My wife and I will have it with a dinner, then he and I will review and critique it when we talk.

I know it probably sounds pretentious, but its really not... Its kind of like discussing a book.

Oh, and as to his witness, he's personally brought two people to Jesus since he's been working where he's at, which was probably God's plan for him getting into the business in the first place.

I can honestly say that I have tried it & hate the taste. I tried drinking Crown Royal once & it reminded me of when I was little & I used to get into my dad's cologne & drink it. Its nasty.

I have also seen how a lot of people act when they are drunk. Some get angry quicker, some seem more calm, & others just do stupid things. I see that & don't wish to fall into that.

I've also seen how I used to be with sodas. I would always stock up. I would be afraid I'd do the same thing if I made a habit of drinking beer.

Needless to say, that's a good thing. If it wasn't for those negative things I'd probably be a drinker & be like what I described above.
