"Also, just because someone doesn't agree with my point of view doesn't make me wrong. "

Question: does it make them wrong?

I come here to compare how other's teachings compare with the Bible, and give my opinions when I'm convicted to do so.

As it turns out - there are honest Christians in this world that seek for truth no matter what church they are in. They ignore the "excommunicated" ideas and the "Forbidden authors list" ideas - put up by their traditions and church culture - and are willing to read - to learn - to share across denominational boundaries.

While others "turn a blind eye to the details" of God's Word that "do not please them" - these Christians "see and read them". And they do not always "post" on the board while reading.

So the board serves the purpose not only of comparing notes and correcting my own views (knowing that those who oppose me will find whatever missing pieces there are in what I present) but also of allowing these "lurkers" to compare the views - ignoring the ranting and just recording and comparing the hard facts.

I also learn from those who do post from a rich depth of resources - providing valuable quotes - "details" that further establish truth.

I also learn on boards like these from those who do post but do so in opposition. Sometimes they make good points - and help me to adjust my views as not to "toss out the baby with the bath water".

And then of course - there is the bath water. In that case I learn to sluff off the pointless rants that spring up whenever the opposing argument is weak and needs some more material.

I sometimes see demonstrated on this board -- "When the argument fails - ad hominem prevails" as an instructive insight into general human behavior.

I have learned that the human tendancy to "retreat" when your view is not holding water - often takes the form of "excommunicating the embarrassing details" or attacking those that post them.

It develops into a culture that says "if you refuse to ignore details or revise history as it pleases me to do - then I won't play".

    In Christ,

    Bob

I did not choose any of your ideas because I started posting for an honest interchange of ideas and to express my own thoughts. I have been somewhat disappointed that when reasoned discussion fails (or sometimes before then) the debate degenerates to insult. Sad, huh  ?

Can someone point out where another has changed their view based on someone else pointing out their error?

It might be here but I do not see it!

When two opposing views clash, one or both of them have to be wrong. But what I am seeing is people holding to their view to the end regardless of the evidence.

One of the hardest things to do is to change a mind that is already made up. Based on some of the posts I have read, I was going to post a thread with the same title a bit earlier.

Because of the insults that are thrown around "willy-nilly", I truly wondered what was the real reason for posting.

Why do I post on the board? I really don't anymore  I don't have time to get involved in 10 page debates about the same old issues.

I usually just stop by to read John Gilmore's responses, which are always a pleasure to read.
