I wonder why the 1769 Oxford edition of the KJV capitalized "holy" in "Holy Ghost" every time, but only capitalized "holy" in "Holy Spirit" one time.

Here is one example of how "holy" in "Holy Ghost" was capitalized in the 1769 Oxford although it had not been in many of the earlier editions.

    Hebrews 3:7 [holy Ghost--1602 Bishops]
    holy Ghost (1679, 1715, 1754, 1758, 1765 Oxford) [1629, 1637, 1638, 1683, 1743 Cambridge] {1611, 1613, 1614, 1617, 1634, 1672, 1767 London} (1638, 1722, 1756, 1764, 1766, 1769 Edinburgh) (1762 Dublin)
Holy Ghost (1769 Oxford, SRB Oxford) [1769 Cambridge, DKJB]

Here are several of the places where the KJV has "Holy Spirit," and showing how it was treated in the 1769 Oxford:

    1 Thessalonians 4:8 [see Luke 11:13] [holie Spirit--1560 Geneva; holy spirit--1602 Bishops]
    Holy Spirit (1771, 1773, 1778, 1783 Oxford) [1760, 1763B, 1765 Cambridge] {1750, 1760, 1763, 1795, 1879 London} (1810, 1842, 1858 Edinburgh) (1866 Glasgow) (1813 Carey) (1828 Boston) (1819, 1829, 1843, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1868, 1894, 1954, 1957, 1963, 1971, 1988, 2008 ABS) (1846 Portland) (1984, 1991 AMG) (KJRLB) (Dake’s) (E-R) (1842 Bernard) (1851 Cone)

    Here is my guess.

"Holy Ghost" occurs 89 times in the King James Bible, while capitalization variations of "Holy Spirit" occur a total of seven times, as counted by a quick search of the KJB text at BibleGateway.

To my tired eyes, this suggests "Holy Ghost" was the preferred and accepted designation at the time of the translation or printing.

This is somewhat suggested by the etymology reported in the following Wikipedia article "Holy Spirit."

    Etymology
The meaning of The Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are identical. Holy Ghost was the common name for the Holy Spirit in English before the 20th century. It is the name used in the Book of Common Prayer, the Catholic Douay Rheims Bible and the King James Version (KJV), and is still widely used by English speakers whose religious vocabulary is largely derived from the KJV. The term is still retained in the traditional-language rites of the Anglican Church. The original meaning of the English word ghost closely paralleled the words spirit or soul; only later did the former word come to acquire the specific sense of "disembodied spirit of the dead" and the associated pejorative connotations.[7]

In 1901 the American Standard Version of the Bible translated the name as Holy Spirit, as had the English Revised Version of 1881-1885 upon which it was based. Almost all modern English translations have followed suit.

"Pneuma" is the Greek word for spirit and is found 385 times in the New Testament. It is used in the general sense of spirit as well as the Holy Spirit, and can also mean wind or breath.

    . . .

However, I am sure extensive research, which I do not have the time to do, may shed addition light and different suggestions.

Who is next to venture a guess?

The 1833 edition/revision of the KJV by Noah Webster may have substituted "Holy Spirit" where most KJV editions have "Holy Ghost" since it definitely did in the following two places. The 1842 revision of the KJV by Baptists and other believers may have also. The present-day edition of the KJV called The Evidence Bible may also.

    Luke 4:1 [holy ghost--1568 Bishops]
    holy Ghost (1715, 1754, 1758, 1765 Oxford) [1637, 1743 Cambridge] {1611, 1672, 1711, 1767 London} (1722, 1756, 1764, 1766, 1769 Edinburgh) (1762 Dublin) (1782 Aitken)
Holy Spirit (EB) (1833 WEB) (1842 Bernard)
    Holy Ghost (1769 Oxford, SRB Oxford) [1769 Cambridge, DKJB] {1747 London}

    Hebrews 3:7 [holy Ghost--1602 Bishops]
    holy Ghost (1679, 1715, 1754, 1758, 1765 Oxford) [1629, 1637, 1638, 1683, 1743 Cambridge] {1611, 1613, 1614, 1617, 1634, 1672, 1767 London} (1638, 1722, 1756, 1764, 1766, 1769 Edinburgh) (1762 Dublin) (1782 Aitken)
Holy Spirit (EB) (1833 WEB) (1842 Bernard)
