I was at Staples last night and saw Windows XP Pro upgrade for $179.95. I had a $30.00 coupon which would have put the product down to $149.95.

I started to buy it because I want to be able to access my computer from remote sites.

My question is. After I looked on the package I did not find any info stating that this product would would if you already had Windows XP Home Edition on your computer. All the other operating systems except Windows 95 were listed but not Windows XP Home Edition.

    What's the deal?

According to this link I've found, you qualify for the upgrade, and it seems that you would have to have XP or one of the other compatible systems as your baseline:

    Upgrading matrix

Microsoft is rather vague on the subject, but I believe that it's because the costs look pretty intimidating when you add them up. See this link to Amazon.com:

Windows XP and XP Pro upgrade for sale

By their rhetoric you'd think that you could buy one piece of software and have it all. But if costs are a clue, I'd guess you have to have both the base software AND the upgrade.

Got the XP PRO upgrade. It worked fine with Windows XP Home. Love the Pro package. I have all kind of new security control over my computer and peer to peer network.

    I recommend it.
