Words that offend

I hope we don't start straining at or out gnats over these words. KJB & KJV are equally correct. "The Bible" indicates all the Scriptures placed into one volume regardless of version, and KJB indicates to me "A" Bible and not "THE" Bible. If we try to eliminate every word that offends someone, we'll soon hafta start making blank posts!

That may offend someone also. They'd think we were using code of blankness to talk about them in front of their face.

The word 'Alexandrian' offends me when I'm accused of
being "Alexandrian'.

I certainly don't want to start a debate on this matter, but just to point out that whilst "KJV" is the accepted traditional use in the United States, it is not here in the UK. Although the term "King James Version" is sometimes used here nowadays, we still generally still call it the "AV" ("Authorised Version").

I praise the Lord that our national languages are about 98% the same, & that we can freely converse w/o any major translational barriers.

BTW, are any of the words mentioned so far on this thread offensive to the average British Bible reader, far as you know? A pet concern of mine is to not be offensive to English speakers outside the USA. I know a certain word beginning with "b" that's in everyday common usage in the USA is highly offensive to most British & I therefore avoid using it on the net.

Thanks for your concern. I wouldn't take offence at your "certain word beginning with b" because (assuming it's the word I'm thinking of) I know that it means "a vagrant" in the US, and is not a slang term for the buttocks.

Sorry, David. I meant no slight toward the British usage. However, even with the British AV instead of the American KJV the operative word is version. Is there a movement in the UK known as the AVO movement? Over here Stateside it is referred to as King James Version Only. Do some Brits accept the AV as being the only valid Bible version?

Not David here, but outside of a very small group of American missionaries I don't know of this being an issue in Ireland or the UK.

The one I was thinking of refers to something covered with hemoglobin in USA usage.

Now my turn to apologise! I didn't take you earlier message as a "slight" at all; I just felt that as one of a handful of "Brits" on the Board, it might be helpful in avoiding any unnecessary confusion to point out this minor difference in usage.

Perversly, people on this side of the Atlantic who accept the AV as being the only valid Bible version in English are generally referred to as "King James Version Only". I have very occassionally come across the label "AV Only" (but not "AVO")

One thing which I hadn't come across before joining the Baptist Board is the 1611 KJVO belief. I am sure people holding that belief are not saying that words such as

And hee entred into a ship, and passed ouer, and came into his owne citie.[/COLOR] (Matthew 9.1, 1611 edition, but in modern typeface)

are more accurate than

And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. (Same verse, 1769 edition)
