Now that we've reached the penultimate stage of the World Cup, let's talk about that round here.

So for was have 1/2 of the teams for the quarter finals

    Germany v Agrentina
    England v Portugal

by tonight I think we will have

Italy v hmmm - Ukraine added to the list.

The sad thing is I can see England slopping their way to the finals.

Robbery - absolute daylight robbery. Australia have been dealt a terrible blow in these finals. They are more than worthy of going through to the next round. Personally I hope the Italians are slaughtered in their next game!

I agree, but I can not forsee either Ukraine or the Swiss beating Italy in the quarter final.

No doubts ... no way the last call warranted a penalty kick. That was a shame to lose like that.

    Shame on you Pete!!!

OK, so we were beaten by the better actor on the day, maybe next time we should look at employing a drama coach...

Anyway, the Australian team did well, nice to see real football getting some news time in Australia.

Now begin the preparations for the next cup.

Sure, Ukraine-Italy. I think it will be a very boring match. To be honest the only European team's performance that I have admired has been Spain.

Here's hoping Ghana can pull off the upset against Brazil.

Switzerland goes home, despite not having allowed a goal in the tournament. I don't know that I'm wild about having a game decided by penalty kicks.

I hated to see the Socceroos lose the way they did. I don't think the call was as bad as everyone is claiming, but it still makes you wonder if the refs shouldn't put the whistle in their pocket like they do in the NHL during crunch time. It was definitely a foul, and gave the official a reason to award the PK. You have to play smarter than that at that stage of the game.

By far, the most influential team in the competition so far has been the team of officials. Disgraceful. This World Cup will be remembered as having been won or lost by the refs - not by the team hoisting the trophy at the end.

Any one see that sick move by Ronaldo faking the Ghanna goalie out his shorts and then scoring on him. Wow!

Well, it appeared that the Aussie got the Italian player with his arm. I may be wrong.

    The next round?

    Friday, June 30

At Berlin, Germany vs. Argentina, 1500 GMT

Good match. Could have been the final. Germany appear to be getting better and Argentina may have peaked. I say Germnay in a great one.

At Hamburg, Italy vs. Ukraine, 1900 GMT
Ugly, boring, sloppy, poorly played win by Italy - 1-0

    Saturday, July 1

At Gelsenkirchen, England vs. Portugal, 1500 GMT

Ugly, boring, sloppy, poorly played win by England - 1-0

At Frankfurt, Brazil vs. France, 1900 GMT

This one should be fun. I say Brazil, but with the high France is on who knows?

    Thoughts boys and girls?

Still rooting for Ukraine (Papa was born in Rostov on the Don), England (Cornwall doesn't have a team in the World Cup) and ABF (Anybody But France).

Well France finally learned how to score again. They surprised me by downing Spain 3-1 today.

Here are my predictions for the quarter finals:

Argentina over Germany (by a shoot out)
    Italy over Ukraine
    Portugal over England
    Brazil over France
