B-24. Only bomber capable of hitting the Ploesti oil fields, and starving the Wehrmacht panzers.

Trivia question: What American senator and presidential candidate was decorated for bringing home a crippled B-24 during one of the Ploesti raids?

My uncle was a tail gunner in a B-24. He and his entire crew were killed off the coast of England when their plane exploded. No one knows what happened. They were not under fire and had not yet been in combat on that mission. They think that perhaps some one lit up a smoke causing fuel fumes trapped in the bomb bay.
