I don't have much use for most of the modern, contemporary, "McChristianity" praise choruses that are currently in vogue.

I'll attempt to "unhijack" the thread. [IMG]

My vote for worst hymn ever is "The Church in the Wildwood." I used to play this hymn for congregational singing when I was in junior high. I didn't like the tune and the song just didn't make any sense. Our church was white, not brown, and why were we singing about the virtues of a church building anyway?

Well, one I never heard til we came to this church was "SOmebody Loves Me". Its catchy and has nice intent, but its certainly not my fave.

    Here's the chorus:
"Somebody loves me, answers my prayers. I love somebody, I know he cares. Somebody tells me not to repine. That somebody is Jesus and I know he's mine."

It's the only song old Hollywood producers would use when depicting the church folk in a western town. I think because the average person has no idea what the song is about, so therefore it would not be "sectarian" or "too religious" in those old movies.

Plus I really can't stand the tune.

We sang this one Sunday, fairly fast, and it got the young CCM crowd shoutin' Amen! Still life in the old songs yet!

You're right. E. Margaret Clarkson wrote the original five verses while in a lonely and rather depressed state of mind. Later, after growing in the Lord, she reflected on the original verses and said, "These words are somewhat lacking in true discernment of the Scriptures, for I had not yet learned that God's call is never to unmitigated gloom but is shot through with glory." She later added an addendum, the "truer version," as she calls it.

So send I you - by grace made strong to triumph,
O'er hosts of hell, o'er darkness, death, and sin.
My Name to bear, and in that Name to conquer -
So send I you, My victory to win.

So send I you - to take to souls in bondage,
The Word of Truth, that sets the captive free.
To break the bonds of sin, to loose death's fetters -
So send I you, to bring the lost to Me.

So send I you - My strength to know in weakness,
My joy in grief, My perfect peace in pain.
To prove My power, My grace, My promised presence -
So send I you, eternal fruit to gain.

Much better, don't you think? [IMG]

Doxology!!! Just too... I don't know. Blah!!! [IMG]
Give me a good old-fashioned lively Gospel hymn over this any day! I like songs that speak of a personal relationship with the Lord.

Everytime I see this song in a hymn book, I think of a time when a group of us played charades using songs....It was about 20 years ago, but I still can't sing this song without giggling...

    Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned.

I realize it has been more than 9 weeks since this was posted, but I happened to see it today. And you are mixing 2 different verses to that song. They should be....

Not the labor of my hands
    Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
    Could my tears forever flow,
    All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
    .
    .
    .
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Anything by Ishmael, particularly if foisted on adults (as it all-too-frequently is) or Graham Kendrick (except 'The Servant King' and that Christmas song he wrote about 10 years ago); anything that has to much of 'I' in it and not enough about God eg: "Oh, I feel like dancing" (note to mods - we need a projectile vomiting graemlin/ emoticon for that one!)

    Yours in Christ

    Matt
