I just received a phone call - but it was a wrong #. I asked the young lady what # she called, and the last # was off by one digit.

She did apologize - but I told her I haven't had a phone call all day (does my wife count?), and that she made my day!

So how do you react to wrong #'s?

I'm always polite because I've been there too.

My husband has the same first and last name as two other men, neither of whom we know. By the calls we receive, it's obvious the other two have a bad history of not paying their bills. To make matters worse, one of these men has a daughter with my name. This makes for some interesting phone calls.

I try to be polite. After all, it's easy for me to mess up anything with numbers, and the telephone has plenty!

There was an elderly man who used to call my number about once a week, by mistake. He was so sweet, I miss him now that he finally stopped calling.

    :laugh:Jim1999, you're so funny!

One time a guy called and was very friendly and chatty, until he asked me what was up and I told him about my day. I didn't know who he was, but as a stay-at-home mom trying to potty-train a strong willed child, I believed any conversation with a person over the age of 5 was a gift from heaven. He quickly figured out he had the wrong number.

Another time when my oldest was about 2, she answered the telephone before I could. It was a telemarketer. My daughter was very talkative and when the telemarketer realized she wasn't going to give mommy the phone, he hung up--but not before he'd heard an earful of why mommy couldn't come to the phone, what my dd's accomplishments were that day, etc. Best revenge one can every play on a telemarketer--just hand the phone to a pre-schooler when they call.

    My best wrong number caller?

The one who asked, after only hearing the word hello, "Do yaa'lll make strawberry milkshakes?"

And immediately hung up when I laughed and said "no ma'am."

No idea who she thought she was calling.

Second best: The old fella out on the highway that sells cheap furniture. We had a lovely conversation even after he figured out I wasn't who he thought he was calling and yes, he did try to sell me some furniture! :D

I'm always polite just cause there is no reason not to be.

    I thought of another one.

We used to have neighbors whose phone number was one digit away from the local taxi service. Every Friday and Saturday night about 2 AM when all the bars closed down, drunks would call wanting a ride home. My neighbor got so fed up, she finally started telling the drunks a car was on the way. After a while of "bad service" I guess the drunks quit calling!

I got a call at about 2AM a couple months ago. When the caller asked if Ben was there I said, "I'm sorry but you have the wrong number." To which the caller replied, "Then why did you answer it?"

I was up the rest of the night trying to think up an answer! :D:D

When I started nurse training, we had to live in the nurses quarters with an old dragon to lock us sweet innocents up at night.

Well, of course, every ship that came into dock would ring ALL the nurses quarters in town for instant party groups. Some of the guys who rang sounded full as a goog or plain weird so we would get Sister Malena Stool or Matron Penny Cillin to take them down a rung or two.....we always enjoyed someone giving the poor fool a dressing down, the parties were an education too.

Ahh the good old days.....so much the better 20 years on more:laugh:

I came across this story some time ago about a wrong number. Thought you might enjoy it.

I came across this story about a young mother who was having a bad day. Her phone rang and a kindly voice on the other end said, “How are you, sweetheart? What kind of day are you having?” “Oh, Mom,” said the woman, “I’m having such a bad day. The baby won’t eat, the washing machine broke down, the house is a mess, I haven’t had a chance to go Christmas shopping and we’re having two couples over for dinner tonight.” The mother was overwhelmed with sympathy. “Oh, honey,” she said, “sit down, relax, and close your eyes. I’ll be over in half an hour. You can go shopping. I’ll clean the house and cook your dinner for you. I’ll feed the baby, and I’ll call a repairman to fix the washing machine. Now stop crying. I’ll do everything. In fact, I’ll even call John at the office and ask him to come home and help out.” “John?” said the housewife. “Who’s John?” “Why, John! Your husband!” And after a long, uncomfortable pause, “Isn’t this 555-1265?” “No, it’s 555-1264.” “Oh” said the kindly person, “I must have the wrong number.” There was another pause. Then the helpless woman asked, “Does this mean you’re not coming over?”

An elderly, apparently senile old woman kept calling my home and leaving messages for "Robert". At first I let the answering machine answer and just deleted it. When she kept calling, I answered and told her there was no Robert there. A moment later she called again and again and again and again. I came home from work one day and found 17 calls on my answering machine from her. I got so frustrated that I started answering and yelled at her angrily. She still kept calling until I gave up and paid $30 to have my number changed to an unlisted one.

Apparently she or Robert had tried to program his number into her phone for speed-dialing and got it wrong, or maybe he programed the wrong number into her phone deliberately. She was too senile to realize that it was the wrong number despite my telling her so--over and over again.

Another time I kept getting a call around 1:30 AM from what sounded like a very drunk man who couldn't seem to understand that he had the wrong number. He eventually stopped calling.

Another time I got a call from someone who was looking for someone else. I told him he had the wrong number, and he wouldn't believe me. He insisted he had the right number--not having sense enough to realize that whoever he was calling had probably given him the wrong number. I've done that when I didn't want someone to call me. I was enjoying it but told him I don't give my name over the phone to strangers. He said, "I just told you my name." I replied, "That's what you say." That made him angry, but I didn't care! I was actually enjoying it! How did I know that was his real name? Besides, he wasn't wanting me--so why should I give him my name? Fortunately, he never called again.

I have also gotten several calls for a Barbara with my last name, and I also occasionally get her mail. I don't know a Barbara. One of my brothers was once married to a Barbara. Other than that I've never known a Barbara.

Of course, I've gotten the occasionally prank call from kids asking the usual question, "Is Albert there? I said no--not realizing it was a prank call. Then the boy said, "You better let him out of the can before he suffocates." That was one thing I never did as a child. I did other mischievous things, but I never made prank calls.

I generally try and be helpful. I have even called people back on a few occasions that have left messages that were wrong numbers, but sounded important.

The ones that do bother me are the ones that wake us in the middle of the night trying to order a pizza. Our number must be close to a pizza number, because it has happened many times over the years. I have joked to my wife when that happens, I am tempted to tell them about our super duper "pick up" special and take the order, but I wouldn't really ever do that.

Start asking them to give you their credit card info to pay for the pizza in advance, THEN tell them it's the wrong number! I'd guarantee you they make sure to dial correctly next time.
