First there was the out call at first base where the first baseman's foot was a good 18 inches off the base,

    Definitions

    Rule 2.00

    A CATCH
....In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his release of the ball is voluntary and intentional.

Which one is the worst call?

The first one. The ump's vision was cut off, but it was obvious to everybody else.

I'm not too worried about either one of those. Yes, they were terrible calls, but Welke and DiMuro are good umpires. They just made a horrible call.

Umpiring will become way better whenever MLB decides to do something about Bob Davidson, Joe West and C.B. Bucknor.

I know a few umps and they hate it when first basemen 'frame' the out, meaning when they keep their foot on the base and hold their glove (with ball inside) up in the air and then look at the ump. But this play is giving the first baseman a bit too much leeway!

    Another look at it:

IOW, umpiring will become better when umpires get fired over making egregiously bad calls. For example, whoever it was that called the Dewayne Wise non-catch a catch. Until umpires have the threat of getting fired, we're going to continue to see horrible calls like these.
