A Baptist Historical Society
What I am asking below may not directly affect you, but since I know that some of you are interested in Baptist history, I'd like like to ask your opinion on something. In our state, we have Texas Baptist Historical Society which is related to and (I suppose) funded by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It has done a lot of good work, but seems to have become almost non-existent. They haven't published a journal since 2012.
My idea is that a historical society of Texas Baptists not... -
"Ask Jesus into your heart"/"The Sinners Prayer"
Of all the verses in the bible that describe God's requirement for man to receive salvation what percentage of them use the words "Faith", "Believe" or "Repent" as opposed to "Ask Jesus into your heart" or even praying a prayer for that matter? I'll help you out, Faith and Believe are found the most over 100 times, Repent is probably second with at least 33 times, and you could maybe argue that 3-5 particular passages describe a prayer, and ZERO times do we find man commanded to "Ask Jesus... -
What do you think?
As a youth, only certain people had tattoos: sailors, convicts, criminals, perverts, undesirables, bikers, and anyone else that was generally socially questionable.
Not certain why sailors had them. Figured it was a tension release after long months at sea.
Most men were ashamed of being tattooed, especially after salvation, and it was rare to actually see one not covered.
I don't recall a single woman with a tatto.
Places to get tattooed were always in the most seedy part of towns,... -
Family Planning
In another thread - Steve stated he is opposed to Family Planning.
Now, Gen 9:7 states: And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
So is it wrong for a couple to practice family planning ?
Some will say that, we have accomplished that mission,
and now, we should practice family planning so we do not
overpopulate the earth

The Sinners Prayer
Often the subject of "the sinners prayer" comes up here on Baptist Board.
In order to have a realistic discussion, we need to agree exactly what the sinner's prayer is.
If you have a 3x 5 card with "TSP" written on it and someone simply reads this "prayer"
Is this person truly saved.
Same goes for Bible Tracts - There is usually "TSP" printed at the end of the trac -
Often a teleevangelist will lead the congregation and TV audience in a phrase by phrase adaption of "TSP"
Again - is... -
Should I Leave the Southern Baptist Convention?
I have a few reasons to leave the SBC now, but I wanted to discuss with you guys and my church leaders whether I should stay or not. Here are my current reasons for wanting to leave, which may expand honestly:
1. The denomination is too "big tent." I now believe that doctrine and moral teaching is of extremely high importance. A significant minority, if not a majority at times, of Southern Baptist churches teach or enforce things I could in no way support. (Charismaticism, a kind of... -
Charles H. Spurgeon And The Revised Version
I think this is the proper forum for this topic.
Some on the BB think that C.H.S. only made one nod toward the RV and its textual decisions. I am here to set the record straight.
It is true he favored the KJV in may ways over that of the RV, however, in terms of textual choices many times he held to the readings of the RV --not that of the KJV.
"...we desire that the common version may be purged of every blunder of transcribers, or addition of human ignorance, or human knowledge, that so... -
Ever and anon . . .
. . . the cry of the noncalvinist is, "Why doth He yet find fault?"
Mark Corbett: But if faith is an irresistible gift that does not depend on us choosing in any way, than why does God not give this gift to everyone? Predestination and Foreknowledge
And the answer is the same as was supplied millennia ago: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
It also is far from clear that Romans 9:13 is referring to Esau's eternal... -
Do We Bow Down Enough in Church?
Do we bow down enough in church services?
The meaning of the Greek word most commonly translated "worship" (proskuneo) is :
worship or veneration of a divine or supposedly divine object, expressed concretely with falling face down in front of someone (Friberg Lexicon)
This meaning is very clear in many of the uses of the word "worship" (proskuneo) in the Bible. For example:
NIV 1 Corinthians 14:25b So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"
NIV... -
"Wrath of God" as used in the Scriptures
This thread is to explore the wrath of God.
Let me start by pointing out that Ephesians 2, 4, 5, 6 all use the word wrath.
For example: 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
It is not uncommon to read into the word "wrath" terms such as rage, fury, barely or out of controlled anger.
However, that is not (imo) the type of display or the thinking that should be attached to the use of the word...
