Defining what a church is that God would call His own
Talking of churches, I believe there are distinctive markers of a true christian biblical New Testament assembly that God would call His own.
* Believing the bible is the Word of God inerrant and infallible all sufficient rule of practice
* Believing in the trinity-- One God in three persons/substances/essences
* Believing in baptism by full immersion of only those who are saved in the first place
* No pedobaptism
* The independence of the church - seperate from control by any other church... -
The ECF were Pretribulational
Hokey Dina! Did I just begin this thread?
It seems there are some who really want to discuss this so I have decided to open this thread.
Before we get into it, I would like to highlight the fact that I am in no way teaching that the ECF did not believe that the church will exist on earth during the tribulation as well. Therefore, if you start claiming that I am teaching this, you need to learn how to listen. Yeehaw cowboy.
And now, without further ado:

Is Acts 17:30 only the elect or the entire human race?
"Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
Now, Calvinists teach that the will of man is in bondage, and therefore no able to chose whether to follow the Lord Jesus or not. This, they say is only what the "elect" can do, since they have been predestined, and... -
Singing "New" Older Songs
Love the Getty's performance and melody of "Before the Throne of God Above". I thought how wonderful to have a "new" hymn with such spiritual depth.
Then found it was written by Charitie Lees Bancroft in Ireland in 1863 and included in Bishop Ryle's Spiritual Songs and in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book
So while it was "new to me" and with a "new" melody, it is truly an old classic! -
Erickson on the incarnated Christ
Is Millard Erickson correct that when incarnating, Christ's divine attributes became limited? (Christian Theology: 1998:751) why/why not? -
An Incarnational Christological Question
Christ has two natures.
Is Wayne Grudem correct that one nature does some things the other does not do? (Systematic Theology:1994, 558). why/why not? -
Calvinism started with John Calvin True or false?
False is the answer. But to many anti Calvinists and those ignorant of history the answer would be true. Reading this book on the history of alcohol in the church and it's as clear as day that Luther whom came before held to Calvins views. -
Wine comes from God but drunkenness from the devil!
This is something all the reformers believed. Just finished reading about Zwingli and his love for wine. I tell you these books help prove that teetotalism and those that hold to it are not of God or at lest hold to something unbiblical. I mean the reformers were against teetotalism, the colonials, and so many others. Why is it that it takes up to this century after the Temperance movement to popularize teetotalism? It was not a popular ideology amongst Christian's that lived in the past. -
2 Peter 2:1 shows Jesus died for the non-elect
"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, and will bring swift destruction on themselves"
The word "bought" here is from the Greek, "agorazo", which refers to the "redemption" of Jesus Christ, of His blood shed for ALL sinners. This use is as defined in the standard Greek lexicons of Arndt and Gingrich, Thayer, and Robinson, and is also used... -
1 Timothy 2:4 - "God wills ALL men to be saved"
" For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
The salvation of ALL HUMANS is said in the Word of God, to be "good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior", which is what this passage, and indeed the entire Bible very clearly teach. However, there are some who would have us believe, that the word "all" does not really mean "everyone without exception", but will limit...
