Unfortunately there are some of the shallower sort who incessantly regurgitate the same old assault- that Calvinists follow a man and not the Bible even though Calvin was one of the greatest men of the Bible who ever lived; a fact agreed upon by theologically literate people of all stripes (at least all Protestant ones).
So I thought I'd share a quote from Jacobus Arminius on John Calvin:
Arminius: "I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his...
Years ago(back in the 1980's), purely by accident, I discovered a document in my Bible(bound, when the Bible was manufactured), in the front, just before the index.
This document was called........“JAMES”, and it turned out to be a letter of appreciation, from the translators of the King James Bible, to the King.
As I read this letter, I was seeing it as a peace of antiquity, that really didn’t have anything to do with today; That is, until I reached the middle of the 5th paragraph,...
When debating Calvinists I too often here them quote Romans 3 where Paul said, "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God."
They quote this as if it proves their contention that because no one is righteous according to the law that no one can be declared righteous through faith either. They wrongly seem to equate the righteousness which people of that day believed came by observing the law with righteousness, apart from the law, which...
Let's go line by line:
"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,"
Calvinistic: Everyone suppresses the truth from birth (Total Depravity), so this is just God revealing his wrath against all fallen humanity.
Non-Calvinistic: God is revealing his wrath against people who actually suppress the truth.
"since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them....
I'm jumping in, taking Dr. Bob's advice to start a new thread so the debate on ecclesiology may continue.
I think RUIZ brings an infallible proof to the table with "Logos", which is a theologically-rich term that cannot be properly defined merely as "word"; ecclesia being similar in nuanced complexity, and defying simplistic definition that DHK attempts to give it. ("simplistic" here intended as descriptive of the method, not a pejorative against DHK).
Now Gentlemen, please carry on the...
