While it is still not clear whether it was Georgia that escalated the conflict first, or Russia through its local puppets and mercenaries who provoked Tbilisi, the basic fact remains that the fighting is taking place exclusively within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia. Despite the Western media’s persistent description of the Russian military in South Ossetia as “peacekeepers,” they are and have always been nothing but an occupation and invading force.

In fact, Russia has used the same method for years elsewhere. In Transnistria, a secessionist area of Moldova, Russian “peacekeepers” have kept the local gang of unreconstructed Stalinist smugglers since the early 1990s, and in Abkhazia, another breakaway Georgian territory, it is the same “peacekeepers” and mercenaries who have ethnically cleansed the Georgian majority and de facto annexed the area.

I am really glad that the US has never supported breakaway nations. Only an imperialist nation would do such a horrendous thing.

What do you mean by "breakaway nations"?

She wants the region back for herself - simple enough.

There are no 'good guys' or 'bad guys' in this one sadly. All powerful nations jump to the assistance of 'breakaway' regions when it benefits them. Kind of like the US and Panama.

    War is Hell - always.

Russia agreed to a cease fire, said they have stopped hostilities all the while not slowing down one bit. Russia months ago sent out a decree that anyone in Georgia could claim Russian citizenship and then used that to say that Georgia was harming Russian citizens. Not really all that good.

Well, that plus Russia doesn't want any competition in the oil pipeline business. Russian jets fired 52 rockets "at" the BTC pipeline (which is not even in South Ossetia) to show they can shut it down anytime they want.
