I just recieved my membership card from the 8th Cav Regiment today.

That got me thinking. Should our churches issue membership cards?

Just wondering for what purpose, couldn't really decide until I know why.

We get a membership certificate. It always includes a verse that was laid on our pastor's heart for each member/member family. It's really neat. A card? You mean like a card you get for a gym or something? Unless it gets me a discount somewhere, I don't see the need for it.

Then we can say we are a card carrying Baptist.

It could say "Do not allows a priest to say last rites over me:laugh: "

This thread only proves one thing - I have way too much time on my hands:smilewinkgrin:

Hmm, if your church did have a membership card, what would you want on it:saint:

Why, except to hold your burial plot?

I wonder if that would hold your place if you moved out of state? In Texas we have a law that says it is illegal to bury anyone living out of state inside the boundary lines of Texas.

I hope that refers to someone who has passed away. It would be difficult to bury someone who is still living.:tongue3:

BTW - there must be a way to bury somone from out of state. Last week I had a funeral for a man here in Missouri and he was sent to Texas for bural.

I doubt if my church would ever issue membership cards. But if it did, there should be a place on it for the church clerk to list the kind of member the cardholder is. The clerk would mark whether the member is (mark any which apply):
    1. Loyal and regular
    2. Occasionally shows up
    3. Constant griper
    4. Power-hungry
    5. Big giver
    6. Scrooge
    7 This member is trouble

Better a card than a branding mark!

    haha

I don't think a card is a bad idea. At least then you'd know that the church got your records from the previous church (or even requested them). I've always wondered if churches ever let that slip through the cracks.

    Salty,
Have you run out of new ideas or simply following the media's lead in rehashing old stuff like Hawaii 50, the Defenders etc.... :tongue3:

no matter, we don't do cards, only a secret handshake!

That is great! Maybe each person should be voted on by a group of peers every so often.:tongue3:

When I find the passage in Scripture that describes or commands us to have church membership as we do today, then maybe I'll consider the membership cards to be of some value...other than for the above purpose:laugh:

The more important question is whether churches should have secret handshakes...

I don't know all the details, but a "ticket" was required to attend Mr. Spurgeon's church. It limited the seating to the legal requirement.

Spurgeon had been through a horrific fire and this played on his mind afterward. He greatly feared an over crowded church and hence a fire hazard.

    Cheers,

    Jim
