Am I the only one that has trouble following posts when entire lengthy poss are quoted over and over and over again?

I am beginning to stop reading because nothing seems to make sense anymore.

    Cheers,

    Jim

If they properly use the quote feature, I like it and I find it easier to follow the discussion.

If however they don't use it properly, I agree with you it can become confusing to follow.

    I agree Jim.

When I "quote" I only put in the section that is pertinent to my main point. I do use the "..." to show where I have deleted part of the quote.

Boy, if I were in charge, I would make a rule:thumbsup:

Maybe the original lengthy quote is too long to begin with..at least for my short term memory problem........

If everyone stayed with the original question or thought we wouldn't need any repeats.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I have often wondered why people feel the need to quote much less quote within quote within quote across the various bb's I enjoy. I could understand if I couldn't read the post's above the quotes, but thats not the case.

On a board like this one, quoting is a good thing. Many threads get many responses from many people. Quoting the text that you are responding to allows other people to know the context of your post, especially if you are responding to a post that happened 10-15 posts ago.

With that said, quoted text should be kept to a minimum. There's no no need to include text in a quote that is not necessary for the context.

I know the quote features are really useful, but the scenario that makes me chuckle is when there is a long opening post, and then the first reply quotes the whole thing.

I started in the computer industry when memory and disk space were very expensive, so it always makes me wonder how much more space we are using when we quote stuff like that, but if the software that runs this board is of that new-fangled object-oriented variety, that may not be an issue.

    To-day is Saturday, innit?

I sure hope none of you suffer strokes where memory is greatly impaired, where reading a paragraph can be a challenge.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I don't read looooooong posts. I only quote what I'm replying to, which is rarely the whole post if it's long. The least interesting are the long posts that have a lot of misspelled words and no punctuation. Some people don't capitalize any words and make one VERY long paragraph with no capitalized letters or punctuation, and those are impossible to read and make no sense. I just ignore them.

SALTY is in charge?! The things that happen when I don't look here for a while

But yeah, when SALTY posted it was probably Sunday morning here, but now it seems I'm here back from the future (*cough*) a little too late to stop SALTY becoming da boss :tonofbricks::tongue3: :)

I usually do quotes that I am referring to, especially if the original quote was 10 posts ago and other topics are being talked about in the thread. I would get confused otherwise.

I don't think anybody minds a quote, as long as you quote the entire post, especially if it is an extra long one. As ABC said if it was several post ago, esp it it was on a different page.

So please quote when it will help your thoughts.

It would be like having an argument about the 2nd Amendment (the right to arm bears) but posting the entire US Constitution would be unnecessary.

This is one of my pet peeves. If you are going to quote someone, quote what is pertinent and move on. I have seen many quote a huge post just to say, "I agree with you."

If you have several points to address, break it up into several smaller quotes. Throwing up (another) wall of text is rude and bad netiquette.

And ALWAYS preview your posts, especially if you are typing in your own bbcode(s). It will save yourself embarrassment and everyone else a headache. ;)

opps, I meant to insert "DON'T" between "you - quote"

Therefore, it should read "as long as you DON'T quote the entire post

    Salty

I wonder how long I will be banned for that:laugh:
