I am thinking about enrolling in Liberty University's Educational Specialist (EdS) online programin the Fall. I don't need/want a doctorate degree but it would be nice to have more education courses. Of course I could do that without getting a degree, and I don't want a third masters, but if I am going to do the work and spend the money I think I should get something to hang on my wall and put on my vita . I think the program would benefit me greatly and put me in a position to do more than just teach. Right now this is nothing more than thinking outloud, online. Next week I might be off the idea, who knows. Anyway I was wondering if anyone on here has done a EdS degree or knows someone who has. How did it help your career?

    Thanks,
    Martin.

When I hear others talk about it in academia I do not see that they see much value in it.

The courses I saw posted online at the link you gave were nothing more than you could get at any university.

I pretty much agree. The Ed.S. appears to be a useless degree created by the professional educational establishment for those wanting a promotion or pay raise in the PS system. Furthermore, I would recommend taking content courses rather than education courses, which are pretty much "Mickey Mouse" and worthless, IMHO. Education falls short, IMHO, of being an academic discipline in itself. Unless you are taking some specialty course, such as Assessment of Exceptional Learners, I would not recommend educational courses. Many folks have the mistaken idea that taking educational courses will help make them a better teacher; generally, they will not. The best way to improve his or her teaching is working under a master teacher.

Most education courses are about education. It has little to do with instruction or teaching. It's more about educators trying to justify education as an academic discipline. On the other hand, I think education is an interdisciplinary matter without a country. It stretches across all disciplines and incorporates all. Furthermore, I think of education as a process involving many factors of which teaching is one. Teaching is what teachers do within their own academic discipline.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I would love to reply one by one but I think I can handle it better with a group reply. Anway, I talked it over with my stepfather. He is a retired dean of a school of education at a state university. He was in full agreement with what has been said here. In fact, he was unaware that the EdS was still even offered. So, between his advice and the advice I have been given here I can say 100% that I will not be doing a EdS. I will stick with my earlier decision to pursue no further official education. Two MA degrees are enough for the foreseeable future. Thanks again.
