Here's a question. Maybe not the right place, but not sure where else it would fit. How many use a Bible cover for their Bibles? I know they come in handy for carrying pens, papers, etc. but mine, with a zipper, seems to tear up the edges of my Bible when the zipper rubs on it. I just bought a new NKJV Study Bible, Scofield edition (finally found one in the format I like) and don't want to tear up the cover. How many use one?

I don't. I want people to know that I'm "carrying".

I've used them in the past but don't anymore. I find they just get in the way of holding and using my Bible well. I'm also a woman so always have my purse - and have my pens and such in there.

I know our pastor always has a cover for his Bible but what he has is sort of different. It's an old Coach bag (as in the purse/leather company) that is sized just right for his Bible. It's about 2" thick, is closed on 3 sides and has a zipper that is on the 4th side that goes slightly over either edge of the ends of the zipper. This way, he opens the zipper and just pulls his Bible out then sets the cover aside. It protects his Bible but then the cover is not in the way of using his Bible. I like it but have not been able to find another like it (it's old Coach). I may end up having one like it made for my husband by our local saddle shop guy who works with leather. He's got good quality leather and can easily make this thing.

I use one and have no problem with it. I bought it after a new, fairly expensive Bible got ruined by falling into a mud hole. I was walking up my drive way and slipped on some wet grass. My new Bible flew out of my hand and was no more. I went out and bought Bible cover with a nice big handle and that has not happened again. :)

I take it you have a zippered one? Doesn't the zipper kind of rub away on the bottom of your Bible after a while? Mine has "chewed " through the binding pretty well, and believe it or not I duct taped it to prevent further damage, but I now have my new bible and don't want to have that happen to it.

Buy the next larger size and just sit your bible in it. When you need it take ot out of the case and your good to go.

I have used them as covers and as carrying cases, now I don't use them at all. I carry my pen in my pocket, and my notebook just get carried along. The real trick was finding a notebook that matched my bibles size.

B4L, it sounds like your case is too small for your bible. Try the next larger size, like Puros said. The zipper should not cause any damage.

I use a leather cover that my mom gave me. I learned the hard way too to keep my bible in a case. I left one in my car for a few minutes once and I made sure to roll the windows down because it was summer and I didn't want the heat to damage my bible. In the meantime a surprise thunder storm popped up and it rained on my bible before I could get the windows up. It
messed up all the gold gilding. Since then, my bible stays in the case unless I'm using it, even at home.

It is zippered, but it has not caused me any trouble in almost five years.

Yes, I use bible covers on most of my bibles. But two Bibles near my desk I use mainly for reference do not have covers.

But the Bible I take to church (which stays in the car all the time except when I'm in church) and the one I use studying at home both have covers. Why? Because I like the covers. I get really neat ones - I find the way most Bibles look to be sort of boring (not the inside though!).

A bible on my desk also has a cover because it's a hardback and it's pretty ugly without the pretty cover I put on it.

My cover is handy because I keep my dry highlighter and a mech. pencil with it. And I keep all kinds of various other items in the case like commentary prints , notes from Sunday school and in that class we print and share info on topical subjects and such on top of the printed lesson plans.

In a nutshell, they are handy.

I have a large Bible cover which I used with my wide margin Bible (which I carried when I taught a lot of small group Bible studies) and which I currently use with my NKJV Study Bible.

I also find it handy when I carry two or three small Bibles or other books which will fit in it.

I have a Nelson NKJV Study Bible which is so heavy that it would probably self-destruct under its own weight if I dropped it. I will not go anywhere with that Bible without putting it in the Bible cover.

I agree with the other posters who have suggested that if the zipper is chewing up your Bible, you probably have the wrong size cover.

By the way, I also do not put the Bible's front and back covers inside the pockets provided for them. I simply set the Bible inside the Bible cover and zip it up, being careful not to get any ribbon markers or any other parts of the Bible caught in the zipper.

I also have a Nelson NKJV Study Bible and I agree it's like carrying around a building in a Bible Cover. My Bible Cover is an Extra Large so I have a little extra room inside.

OUCH!!! I just looked at what I wrote. "like carrying around a building...a little extra room inside." Sorry folks, the pun wasn't intentional.

My Wife and I visited a church once while searching for a new church home, and later we heard that a Deacon had said to someone "they won't come back, people who carry big black bible covers don't stay here." Yup, I do and we didn't. We still laugh about that.

My "car" Bible is in a cover, and that's the only one. It's pretty cool, it looks just like a football complete with laces and NFL (New Found Life) on the cover. My playbook :)

I have no idea. The people were friendly, outgoing, and didn't appear to be judgmental in any sense. Maybe this particular Deacon has had a bad experience with someone who carried such a Bible cover and it has affected his perception of people who do. My Wife and I had a good laugh over it.

Good question! My best friend's and I's bibles are getting pretty beat up so we were talking about options to preserve them. She found out about a place to get bible covers. We both embroider but have found that purchasing a bible cover and then adding our own personal touches is the best option for us. Good luck on your search, hopefully this helps!

I use Bible covers when I take a Bible to church, the park, library, and anywhere away from home. But I generally take my Bible out of the cover when I arrive at my destination. I have several Bible covers--different sizes and styles. And I think the online vendor Bible Covers has a lot of options.

Ann, I think the bag you may be looking for is the Coach basic bag and it's available on the Coach website for $168
