I recently ran across a site that says it has 160 English versions of the Bible (I didn't count them, but I'll take the site's word for it), most of them in the public domain.

    http://lookhigher.net/

There are some of the oldies but goodies — Tyndale, Bishops', Coverdale — as well as some lesser-known versions —such as the 1855 Calvin Bible and the Baptist American Bible Union 1865 New Testament:

And as they went along the way, they came to a certain water. And the eunuch said: See, here is water; what hinders that I should be immersed?
And Philip said: If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And answering he said: I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
And he commanded that the chariot should stop. And they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he immersed him.
(Acts 8:36-38, The New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, American Bible Union, 1865.)

Thanks for this link. This web site has the text of some Bibles for which I have been looking. I had briefly looked a copy of the 1911 revision of the KJV on microfilm at a library. This site has a copy of it that I can examine more closely.

This site also has the text of the 1877 Revised English Bible that Charles Spurgeon praised in a review. In an email, Bob Ross cited Charles Spurgeon as writing the following in his review concerning this 1877 edition: "Here is our own English Bible with its mistranslations amended, and its obsolete words and coarse phrases removed" (Sword and the Trowel, Sept., 1877, p. 438). Spurgeon added: "We commend the work heartily" (Ibid.). I had tried to find a copy of this Bible in print, but I had not yet come across one.

Personally, I find it almost unbelievable that someone who is a Moderator on the Baptist Board would even suggest an site that has such Bible versions, that are 'Gnostic' and/or otherwise hereti...

    Uh- what?

    Wait a sec -

    Uh - Sorry!

    Wrong thread. :D

Definitely a good and useful site!

    Now on a serious note:

    And out of curiosity -

Are any of the Berkeley, MLB ("New" Berkeley), Moffat, RSV (1952), D-R, or Beck, Taverner's, Great, or Wessex gospels versions here? I did not notice any of them, but perhaps I am not totally familiar with the particular nomenclature of all of them or simply overlooked one or more, given the large number of listings.

I did glance at a few, and would have liked to have seen some more of the earlier versions with some additional usual letter forms of their day, such as the 'long "s"', and some of the letter forms that would have been found in Wycliffe, for example, even though the modern forms make it much easier for this dummy to read.

I would add that this is, by far, the most comprehensive listing I have ever seen on-line, even though I am not any 'computer whiz' by any stretch, and one I believe anyone could put to excellent use.

So- even though I had to 'borrow' my bride's hands, for this - make it four thumbs up and thanks for the tip, rsr.

This web site sure refutes the KJV-only claim that implies that the KJV is the only English Bible in the public domain or the only English Bible that is not copyrighted. This web site has two pages or two lists of English Bibles that it identifies as "public domain Bibles" and "more Public domain Bibles."

That argument is one of the dumbest I have seen used by the radical KJVO people anyway. First of all what difference does it make? Anything published in the US after the 1920s is no longer under copyright. Also, in the UK rights in the AV are still vested in the Crown (as a quick look at the title page of any British Bible will show).

Apparently the site has added 40 or so Bibles since the first post. Among them are the Anglo-Saxon Gospels, Hatton Ms. 38 and Corpus Christi College Ms. 140. Also on the list are Caedmon's paraphrase, the Durham Book of the Lindisfarne Gospels (with Anglo-Saxon interlinear), the Great Bible (contained in the English Hexapla) and the '73 edition of the RSV (which, I believe, is the one I have in a box somewhere around here.)

This is a first. EdSutton has revived a thread. It had been his consistent practice in the past to make sarcastic remarks about revived threads.
