Do you believe that those who try to set dates for Christ's return are in sin by doing so?

WHen the Bible says so clearly that no man knows the day or hour, it just seems very rebellious for a man to try to figure out what God has said man can't do.

I didn't answer your poll. I don't know but it is foolish. Teaching a false doctrine when one knows it is false is a sin, but who am I to say what he knows. I know a date would be wrong, so Harold Camping is wrong.

I couldn't make a clear cut response to the poll either. The Bible tells us not to date set, now is it a sin? to do so.

If in doing so you should cause someone to stumble, or become confused; Yes it would be a sin. William Miller with his 1844 prediction of the Lords return, probably did untold damage to some of his people. Which I am sure! he will be required to recompense for.

Also I don't think the scriptures provide us with sufficient information to set any date, or time. Such as the Earth age, doing it by the generational records does not guarantee you are right. Jesus was called the son of David, although he was a Thousand years removed from David. In Hebrew generations, the patriarch of a generation is the father of all successive sons.

So by trying to set an Earth age by such methods, probably guarantees you to be wrong. How old do I say it is, well not less than 6000, and probably not more than 10 - 12,0000. But then does it really matter??. If it did we would have been told, what does matter is what all of the scripture point too, Jesus Christ.

I would certainly not call this a heresy in and of itself, though certain cult groups might take it that far.
At any rate, it does damage to the proclamation of the gospel because it looks Christianity looks foolish.

And we all get lumped in with those guys by many unbelievers.
But then there will always be that problem and there is nothing we can do about it.

I like Dave Hunt's book "Forewarning." We can't set a date. But the signs that we see today are simply a forewarning of that which is soon to come--the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ, with the following Tribulation.

I wouldn't call them sinners. I'd call them "date nuts."

I don't think so, Scripture doesn't call it a sin neither should we. I find Christians try to find sin under every rock and declare everything under every rock a sin.

Date setting is total and complete error. To do so is to say that you know more than Jesus did.

Anyone remember 88 reasons why Jesus will return in 1988? I was saved that year and remember telling the Lord I hope he won't return yet so I could proved I was serious about my commitment to Him.lol Also a woman came to our church"at that time 1988" and asked the Pastor "do you think Jesus is coming back this year?" He said "Lady I don't know, but weather He does or not you need to get right with Him now!". Well she never returned.

They're just acting contrary to the Bible. Christ said that not even He knew the date of His return, only the Father.

    Is that not sin though?

I think the important lesson one way or the other though is that we need to be careful not to try to go beyond the revelation of scripture.

Too much speculation is a bad thing I believe.

I agree. It is sinful to claim to know something that the Bible says is unknowable. It seems like it's the same thing as "adding to the book."

    Only error...

Now leading others to believe that a date is knowable... that may be another issue.

I don't set dates for when Christ will return. If I were to make a prediction I know I would be wrong about it. I don't pay people any attention when they make a prediction. I know they'll be wrong too.

However, I don't see anything wrong making a prediction. I don't think people should go telling others that He will return on a particular day. That would be wrong to do. It is okay to say that Christ will return some day. The catch is we don't know when.

The best advice I can give is to live everyday like its your last & live as if you know Christ is coming in the next minute, because you don't know.

    yes,
    is false prophecy a sin?
it goes against scripture, it is a lie,
    sounds like sin to me.
the only way it isn't a lie/sin is,
if the bible gives a date
    if false propechy isn't wrong/sinful
    if lying isn't a sin.

To say otherwise is to accept the sins of false prohecy, lying
