what if there were no Christian subculture?

How would it affect our faith if there were no Christian subculture?

When I was a kid, if you wanted a Bible, you could get a cheap version at the five and dime, or with greenstamps, or get a pricey leather version at the local bookstore. Choices were limited: only the bookstore was likely to have an RSV. The others would give you the choice of Catholic or Protestant (one version of each.) You could choose red letter or not, zipper or not, and white or black binding. You made your choice and used it til it fell apart.

When a church bought hymnals, that covered their music until they too fell apart.

Folks in our area tended to choose a church based on doctrine taught.

I sometimes wonder how much of what we "know" today is actually stuff advertized to us by Madison Avenue. (From puff Graham on.)

I wonder what will be the next big thing when MacArthur, Warren, Lucado, Meyers, Jakes, Olsteen, etc no longer sell? (Some of us remember when Ryrie, Stanley, and Swindoll were the next big thing.)

I wonder if it is intentional today that most of the new music is non theological so it can appeal to a greater range from more denominations and therefore make more money.

I wonder what would happen if this whole buy/sell marketplace version of Christianity disappeared.

What do you think? Would that be good or bad, and why?

    Our baser instincts would hold

    not caring about one another
permitting human sacrifice of unborn children on the altar of Mannon
permitting slaughter of elderly and persons deemed to be of no use to society
    the death penalty
lauding the wicked persecuting the weak and vulnerable

Christianity is all ready a sub culture.....
There is all ready a black market to smuggle in Bibles and Christianity into places where to be Christian is to court death

Mat 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

That subculture has been going on since before Jesus, so I don't see it ending anytime soon. It would be nice, though.

I think if they stayed out of the churches (church bookstores, for example), and called themselves "for profit" enterprises, it would be fine. It would simply be an alternative to the unbelieving enterprises out there. But the deception comes in when they claim it is "ministry" as they charge for it.

    Agreed!

And I think a lot of good has come from the Christian subculture, as well as a lot of bad.

I just sometimes wonder how much going on in the church world today is a result not of a movement of God, but rather the decisions and orders of some publishers.

We were talking about Charles Wesley hymns the other day, and wondering if they could even find a publisher today as they promote one "brand" of theology. Same could be said of Calvin's writings.

Just think it would be kinda neat to be a fly on the wall at some business meetings.

Sorry nodak but your first post sounds more like a rant than an actual question.

It seems we have to always have someone to look up to for our "authority"

If we are trying to present a point, do we say, "But Dr Stanley says...."

Why not just say, "the Bible says"...
