OKLAHOMA CITY (ABP) -- Oklahoma's Democratic governor ignored pleas of fellow Baptists to veto a measure authorizing erection of a Ten Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds.

Gov. Brad Henry signed HB1330 without comment May 18, clearing the way for a privately funded monument recognizing the Ten Commandments' influence on America's legal system and society.

Groups including Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty had both encouraged Henry, a member of First Baptist Church in Shawnee, Okla., to veto the bill on the principle of separation of church and state.

Good for the Governor, we need more like him. Since the Ten Commandments are not! or never have been part of any Church, or religious organization. But were given by God, to show his standards of righteousness, and mans failure to meet them. To convict and convince men of their sins, and need for a Saviour; I see no violation of Church and State in this.

Americans United and the Baptist Joint Committee are philosophical kinfolks to the ACLU. Do not be fooled by the story into believing that they represent all Baptists. I don't see the SBC involved here.

I am just curious as to where the seperation of church and state comes from? I know of no law that states this at all.

It certainly doesn't come from the constitution.

There wouldn't be much political expediency in Oklahoma being known as "the governor that vetoed the 10 Commandments."

this is fine, it'll get moved soon, but it is fine.

has anyone else wondered why the Ten Commandments get so much press? I mean theologically, where do we stand in relation to them? Not to suggest the 10 Commandments are moot, but why not something from the New Covenant under which we understand our relationship with God?

Why not place a monument of the Beattitudes on the state capital grounds? Or a parable? Just curious if anyone else thinks about this stuff.

The Ten Commandments (of which few "Bible believing" Christians can list them) are a polarizing thing I guess.

    Things like this

Mat 19:18 He said to Him, Which? Jesus said, You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness,

Isn't that only true if you get caught and do not have a great lawyer?

Wonder if SN will report this post trying to get another member banned because he can't handle the truth?

Sorry i had to say that in response to your post gb, but I'm sure he'll come "trolling" along any minute now.

According to webster's yes, but according to your post?

God sees all, we are all "caught". Jesus is the Great Physician, only he can heal and forgive, that makes Him GREAT!

    Disagree?
