The 31-Year-Old in Charge of Dismantling G.M.

    By DAVID E. SANGER
    Published: May 31, 2009

WASHINGTON — It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism.

But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry.

Knows nothing about the automobile business, manufacturing or running any type of business at all.

That's what one expects from the government.

Barney Frank will be his advisor.

Given the track record of his predecessors at General Motors, I can certainly see why you are concerned. I guess that we should have utilized their services.....

Will you quit picking on Bush? The poor man is out of office.

    Carpro,
I agree 100% with your post. These people have no idea how to run a car company. They cannot even do their own job with any efficiency. The point made above that it cannot be any worse than who ran GM before is baloney. First, if the market is not there, then it does not matter how well it is run. Second, the company has a history of creating many thousands of good paying jobs that raised lots of families. The government never created one job based on the private market, and the jobs they do create do not require any accountability or profit to survive. Whether or not the last set of management was good or not, it certainly does not qualify a bunch of government idiots to run a private company.

Yep, they pick their people like they pick their nose.

They make it sound like the 31 YO is doing the dismantling all by himself. He is simply the face for a huge behind the scenes effort to include the executives at GM.

I am more concerned about China buying Hummer. HMMV is the main vehicle of our service men and women who are at war which is why I thought GM was to be saved at all cost. We have soldiers whose lives depend on these vehicles being made to perfection.

I guess I will have to see what this Hummer sale means to the GM defense contracts. I hope China won't be making our military vehicles.

If it doesn't matter how well it is run, then how can Gov mess it up?

GM never adjusted to the market which was a failure of the past management. The past CEO had to go but I agree that Government doesn't need to run GM. If the new management can't do it, then we should fire them and hire new management. There has to be someone in this nation that can run a car company. Ford is surviving.

Well let me clue you in. The government cannot get a letter across town in three days, they cannot balance a budget, in fact, they cannot walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. The management infrastructure in most departments would be fired in one week at a place where a profit is necessary to stay in business. It does not matter how bad GM was, the government will make it worse. If you doubt it, get some popcorn, pull up a chair and watch what happens.

Oh, and by the way, there is plenty of blame to go around between union and management.

I'll take you up on this offer but I think you have this one wrong. GM will come out of bankruptcy lean and strong. What is not fair and Ford is not able to shed all it's debt which will make it harder for them to compete.

    I agree 100%...

I like to say, the union doesn't have one thing management didn't agree to and is not getting the same or better...

History tells us a different story.

The government is also in the railroad business. It's still losing money and draining taxpayers pockets after decades of government "management".
