At the moment I am watching Daystar TV. Rev Jim Reeve is preaching. His subject is the milk of the word vs meat of the word.
To emphasis the passage, he had a staff member, come up , and Rev Reeve litteraly fed him baby food. Then gave him a piece of "adult" meat.

He said he did this to help the audience remember this passage - as stats show that you retain less than 25 % of what we hear after 48 hours.

    Thoughts?

Remembering is useless unless accompanied by doing. The rememberers are deluded unless they are doers.

James 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Weird. My bet is that people are thinking a lot more about eating baby food than they are about the Word.

The key to making people remember is preach clearly and don't be afraid to say it again. Think of things we do remember, like phone numbers, routes home or to work, etc. We don't need weird illustrations. We simply do it enough times that it sticks with us.

I would agree. That illustration is what preaching professors warn about in having an overpowering illustration.

it causes you think about the illustration, and not the biblical/spiritual truth it was meant to illustrate? your now considering the illustration and not the biblical truth your supose to be considering.
    that interesting.

Sometimes an illustration is so overpowering that one remembers the illustration and not the message. That is one of the considerations in sermon preparation.

Eccl 12:9-10, "In addition to being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out and arranged many proverbs. The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly."

I see thanks, I don't think I've heard of this before, but I have seen it done.

I wonder if people can remember anything more than the silly drama? What would they place, biblically, in the "milk" category v "meat" category? How would they handle Heb 6 and God's list?

The foolishness of preaching is based in WORDS. Specific, detailed, to the point and clear - whereas illustrations are "pictures" and up for personal interpretation.

This is why the deep theological truths were not given in the "loose" Hebrew (picture language) but in the super-detailed NT Greek.

Dr. Bob, you are the only one who had the guts to use the word "silly". Thats the exact way I think.

I saw another example (in a church I was attending). The pastor brought in a shopping basket - one of the adults (short in stature) got in the basket - pretending he was a whining child. What was the message, I have no ideal, I only remember the SILLY skit.

really, I just want to hear the word of God, not watch this kind of thing, I'm not there to be entertained by tricks from the preacher.
