I don't necessarily think there is a prohibition against them but I think they're ugly and not exactly smart to get. It's so permanent - so one must think long and hard about living with it for the rest of their lives.

Tattoos are amoral and depends on the person wearing one.

I have a patriotic tatoo on my right forearm from Korean War days. That's back in the days when it was mostly military people who had them. It became a problem to some people when I left the army and became a pastor. I always wore long sleeves to satisfy the critics, but I was never ashamed of it.

I don't think I would get one in civilian life.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Is it sinful? Probably not...although there are some ways in which it could be:
    • If the tattoo glorifies a sinful act, lifestyle, etc.
    • If a kid gets one, and in doing so disobeys his/her parents.
    • If a Christian gets one to "thumb their nose" at others.
    But otherwise...not sinful.

But, there could be a question of wisdom:
    • Could this hurt you down the road in the area of employment, social interactions, etc.?
    • What will it look like when you add 50 years to it...a bad bruise? (seen plenty of those)
    • What will it look like when you add 100 pounds to it? (a tattoo of a daisy might turn into a redwood tree. )
    • Is it worth the risk (small as it may be) of contamination?
    Just my $0.0005 (after taxes)

Mmmm...actually not something I would ever do. Smacks too much of self-mutilation to me.

I would say it depends on where and what the tattoo is. I've seen some small and very attractive ones, and I've seen some very ugly and gross ones. Covering one's entire body with them is vanity and excessive.

I came very close to getting one once that would have been a US flag with the words "America--Love it or Leave it!" However, they wouldn't take a check.

Guess you should've gotten the flag tattooed with a MasterCard symbol underneath it.

I don't see any good reason to get one.

I almost had several at one point in my life. I was lost and deep in sin. I'm certainly glad I didn't go through with them. I'd certainly regret having them today.

My inexpensive tattoo came out of a dare. Some enlisted men said, "A chaplain would never get a tattoo." I said, "Let's go." I got the tattoo and reminded the men I expected to see them all in chapel services on Sunday.

    Cheers,

    Jim

For the most part they did, Donna. Now, they couldn't disobey an officer's order, could they? Besides, it was the chaplain who often had to approve their week-end leaves.

You might be surprised at how religious men became under battlefield conditions. There is an old saying, "There are no atheists in foxholes."

    Cheers,

    Jim

Oh for cryin' out loud, you sure are becoming a curmudgeon, aren't you. Nobody coerced them. Jim did a quid pro quo with them. They could reneg. Do you think that maybe they might attend and actually get something out of it?

Tattoos were forbidden by the 613 statements of the Mosaic Covenant. Those of you who classify the 613 into moral, ceremonial, and administrative laws . . . how do you classify the ban on tattoos?

    This is a silly critique.

What about that "I have become all things to all men...?"

No sense in being critical for its own sake.

I imagine the tattoos that are most regretted are ones of ex-girl friends or ex-wives.

That's why it's important to make sure all the girls you date, and the one you marry, have the same name.
