An individual, gender does not matter, comes to your church during a mid-week day and says, "I was walking by your church last Sunday and heard your choir singing. The music was beautiful. I would like very much to join your choir."

"Are you a Baptist," they are asked.

"No, but I do have a good voice and can read music."

"Are you a Christian?" they are asked.

"I think so," they reply. "I grew up Catholic."

Would this person be welcome in the choir of your church?

    If so, why?

    If not, why?

No. To be a part of the church ministries to include music ministry you have to take the 101 class for membership and understand the requirements for membership. Once you meet feel that you've met the membership requirements. Then you must be voted on by the church to include you into the body. You are then encouraged to take the 102 class and then the 103 class and finally the 104 class. The final class determining what your ministries you may have a propensity for. once you've completed these and have confirmed your baptism (if done previously) or have been baptised by our church you are eligible to participate in Church ministries in either small groups or childrens church or church choir. We have two morning services. The first being traditional and there is use of a choir. The 2nd being contemporary and its more of a band with back up singers.

We view our choir as worship leaders. One cannot lead worship if one is not intimately acquainted with the Object of that worship.

Not to mention...our church requires some level of commitment before one is allowed to be involved in worship leadership of any kind. If nothing else, there needs to be some modicum of accountability.

No. Every person who is in ministry at our church needs to atleast be a regular attendee and have had their lives "vetted out" so to speak. For anyone in leadership, they must be a member. The members of the worship teams are all members of our church.

A church choir is not the same thing as a local community glee club.

A church choir is not about making, enjoying, nor appreciating beautiful music for people to listen to.

A church choir is about leading the congregants in acts of worship. The congregation are the "performers". The audience is God. The choir is part of the worship leadership.

The people who sing in our church choir understand that. If this person wanted to sing in the church choir, then as long as he or she demonstrated that they were followers of Jesus Christ and had a heart to perform acts of worship as part of the choir, then they could join.

Merely desiring to make beautiful music cannot be a prerequisite for church choir membership.

They would be welcome to visit, accept Christ, and become a member. But if they just want to perform, the Methodist church just down the street will welcome them with 'open hearts, open minds, open doors'. :D

'Fighting Bob' must be rolling in his grave right now.

If I did not welcome them, would I not have set myself up as their judge?

No. They would have to join the church first, which would require a statement of faith, and a vote from the current membership. There would also be a vetting process, so we could be sure this person is a good witness. I support our church in doing so. There are a lot of reprobate churches out there that welcome people who "think" they are Christian enough to join a choir, and someone unsure of their salvation probably wouldn't feel comfortable in our church, anyway. There's just too much preaching against sin.

In all probability they'd tell you to go ahead and do that. I think what they want to do is get you plugged into something because, and I know this is strange and not the norm, most people coming to church don't really want to do anything. So its a way to see what people are or could be interested in. At least get them to look before they join the ranks of benchwarmers.

Yes, I have read these, and see your point. But there are many, many verses that exhort us not to judge others. It's hard to reconcile the two teachings.

Can you list the verses and we'll look through them in context?

I judge things all the time. I like coffee more than tea. I like so and so more than someone else. Is this wrong? If I'm not doing anything wrong and judge someone who is. Is that against biblical teaching?
