Last night's ABC Special, Rx for America, shot down yet another rightie smear against President Obama...that being that he cannot speak without a teleprompter. He lucidly and intelligently answered questions and made is case very clearly. Mrs. Poles and I agreed that we could not imagine the last president speaking so clearly and intelligently about such a complex subject. Agree or disagree with him, he made his case clearly and forthrightly.

A president we could mention could not talk well with a teleprompter.

The Obama haters just cannot believe that he is intelligent and can speak in well formed, grammatically correct, well thought out sentences. I can understand people not agreeing with him, but to refuse to admit the fellow can think is strange.

So .... he spoke clearly and pronounced his words distinctly and connected his sentences into good paragraphs and communicated with proficiency.

I'll grab my teacher folder and send him a "Good For You!!" sticker. He can put it on his lapel.

But, what I'm going to send to you, MP, is a "Try Harder Next Time" sticker for your coming-in-through-the-back-door way of getting yet another jab at Bush 43.

Aw, come on, Crabtownboy, don't be shy.

Everybody knows you are talking about former president Bush. Just say it. Just say it right out loud.

Mean what you say and say what you mean.

    Nice try, but simply incorrect.

I saw just a few minutes of it and was surprised at the way the president stumbled and bumbled. He was tentative. He was not engaging, aside from his line that he wanted to meet the 105 year old lady with a pacemaker. The little I watched wasn't for substance (since I don't care all that much). It was for style, to see how he would do as a communicator. It just wasn't good. Comparing him to Bush is an easy one, although Bush for all his bumblings always came across as authentic. Comparing him to Clinton, who is a very good communicator leaves Obama looking like a grade school speech contest participant on the verge of being cut from the competition.

Look, folks, he's not that good at communicating off the cuff like that. His attempt to appear thoughtful makes it look like he is struggling for answers. And according to the reports I have seen, he didn't even give many good answers.

Others who are not die hard Obama supporters like here are not impressed. I was never impressed by his oratory, and his off prompter speaking is pathetic. He is long-winded and often pointless. He talks a lot but doesn't say much. And that has nothing to do with his politics. It has to do with his speaking style.

Donna, you missed it. It was on ABC last night. However, being the great guy that I am, I will give you the link to ABC News which you could have easily found if you did not watch or DVR the event. You can see for yourself. As for Larry, you are entitled to your opinion.

That isn't the point. The point is that those who say Mr. Obama cannot speak without a prompter are wrong. The secondary point is not a jab at Bush, but what a refreshing change to have an intelligent man hold the office. But thanks for the sticker, teacher! :wavey: :flower:

No one ever claimed he couldn't, did they? I think the point was that he didn't do it well. And that was proven again last night. Go back, get a stop watch, and start it when he starts talking, and stop it when he pauses, stumbles with "uh" or some such, and then look at the difference. You will see that he spends a lot of time stumbling, looking for words, and trying to form a coherent sentence of them. (Some would do well to take more time than they did.) But to most students of communication, that kind of stumbling and pausing indicates that one is not well prepared (he has to struggle to find answers to the question) and he is not good on his feet. Again, compare it with Clinton, who was very good at that.

Why are people so enamored with eloquence? I say it is because they falsely equate eloquence with intelligence. I know several people that are absolutely brilliant, but when they talk they sound like hicks and don't communicate very well. By the same token, there are people without one original thought or the ability to solve problems, yet can communicate in an incredible manner. I know several preachers who are brilliant in terms of understanding the bible, but aren't the greatest communicators, whereas someone like Joel Osteen is an incredible orator but doesn't understand many simple biblical concepts.

I'm not calling the President an idiot. However, just because one can communicate well doesn't make one smart. By the same token, just because one can't communicate well doesn't make him a complete idiot. While Bush said some things that made us all laugh at times, the guy wasn't a complete idiot. You don't get to that office being an idiot.

No, but it takes lots of idiots to get you elected.

Moses had a speech impediment, yet lead his people out of Egypt.

Satan gives some of the most eloquent sermons in the bible.

That being said, Obama's speech errors are well documented, and I feel really sorry for people who legitimately think G.W. Bush is dumb.

Manipulation of the media as "bo" did last night is a classic trait of Marxism. The sad part is that if he gets his socialist health plan approved a lot of people who voted for him will be denied essential health care.

As for the remark that: "You don't get to that office being an idiot." I am not sure about that. I think, and have thought since he announced his candidacy after two years in the Senate, that he is a puppet for some leftist billionaires like George Soros.

Now poncho you have your say!

I disagree. Not only does the President speak well, but he articulates a solid grasp of the issues and a clear vision of what is wrong and how to go about fixing things.

If you count "uuuuhhhh" and "uuuummmm" as speaking well.

In his health plan pitch he didn't answer questions - he gave canned off point talking points.

So tell me - if Obama's wife or kids get sick and can't get a particular treatment under his proposed plan for all of us - will he forego the treatment or will he use his special status to obtain health care that won't be available to the peons?

Why is it that the very people who are crafting this plan exclude themselves from it?

Obama's anwer - "uuuuhhhh..." pause... "uuummmm..." pause...

Did I understand Obama correctly, that when his health care plan is passed, he will go off his goverment health care and use the one he has proposed for the rest of us?

    Pretty simple, actually:

    What's wrong: Us.
    How to fix it: Government.
    What is needed: our $$.
What it will cost: much of our individual liberties.

Does that about cover it? Glad to be of help. Give me a teleprompter, a rabid fan base, and a couple of thousand "um's," and I could be Obama.

(of course, I could have been Bush as well. I get my tang tungled all the time and am constantly backing talkwards).

I never said Obama wasn't smart, I said that people in general go nuts over someone that is articulate, automatically assuming that he/she is smart. People thought Bush was dumb because of his communication problems, which is an error. People automatically think Obama has all the answers, or at least most of them, just because he can effectively communicate and sound intelligent. However, he could be completely full of hot air, but hey he talks a good game.

He didn't say that - or anything even remotely close to it.

He said that he wanted the best for his wife and children - then proceeded to dodge the question.
