While I am not a fan of the Emerging Church and its leaders I am curious about something. There was a motion at the 2009 SBC to have the books of Mark Driscoll removed from lifeway. While I can see why many would want this I am curious how far will this go? If we remove his books then there are a list of others that should be removed as well (all the prosperity, etc).

    What are your thoughts?

I cannot imagine why anyone would focus on Mark (For reasons I do not know) and leave "the shack" on the shelf.

Mark actually has some good stuff out, especially his little books- the "a book you'll actually read" series. That is not to say that I agree with everything he says or does- I even have problems with the things guy I see in the mirror every morning does some of the time.

There are tons of useless motions at the SBC, this is one of them. Funny that Driscoll was the topic of more than a few.

If we start on a list of what should be removed from Lifeway stores we are going to be here awhile. I'd start with cheesy, cliched art but I'll get into trouble...;)

Actually I don't think there should be very many things removed from Lifeway stores. People need to learn to think for themselves. (Which is a high calling imho.)

I think Pastor Mark has created an amazing sphere of influence and a lot of people in the SBC are scared of him. He wants to reach people with the Gospel. This whole push against is being facilitated by some statements he made years ago and has since repented publicly and asked forgiveness.

He is a very strong Calvinist (and an outstanding preacher imho.) He is trying to reach people in a post-Christian context that don't speak the language of redemption. You have to have a unique approach to connect with these people. I'm not excusing his past remarks but think people need to get over the past and start looking at who is being effective at reaching lost people with the Gospel of Christ.

The people who are raising objections to Mark Driscoll are also impugning leaders like Danny Akin and Ed Stetzer while also thinking that we should go back the days of tent revivals and men should wear three piece suits and bowler hats. I don't have much time for them or their foolishness.

Pastor Mark is an excellent minister who is realistically trying to connect with people who are not in fellowship with God in a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ. He is a straight forward talker. He doesn't mix his message. He confronts truth. I have listened to him for several years and can't think of anything that he has said that makes me want to remove his books or not listen to him. I praise God for his ministry for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. :godisgood:

Totally agree with you. I've been watching a number of Mark's sermons and man, does he hit it right on the mark. I really have enjoyed listening!

Tell me about it!!! If you youtube Driscoll you will find an excellent response by him to "The Shack".

Now I understand he has some statements about sex toys, etc that are out there but. But again if we take him down how many others must go as well?

One must practice discernment when going in any book store to include LifeWay. Censorship does not make informed and mature Christians. I would think that it could have the opposite effect.

The Shack is a great Christian book. I predict it will have a profound effect on a large number of seekers and the lost. Taking books off the shelf sounds like something the Catholic Church would do not the Baptist Church.

Yes, like confusing them or giving them unbiblical views of God. I've written an article on this book.

Why I am not surprised by freedom's post about the shack?

I think a few guys are up in arms about Driscoll because of the cursing thing that he has repented of and because of his series on sex which was pretty graphic.

I like him because he is very straight in his doctrine and he is reaching a crowd in the Pacific northwest that a "normal" guy ever would. The times I have heard him preach have been a challenge to me about the way I resent the message.

The same reasons we might like him makes him a target for others.

I think there are much worse books. In fact, I am not aware of any problems with Driscoll's books.

Are you making a useful point here? If so, I don't see it.

The book is a work of fiction. It doesn't pretend to be a theological treatise as your article does. About the "God is a black women" point, the author portrays God the father (in a work of fiction) as both a female and at another time a male. How could this be? In fact, He is neither. Have you acvtually read the book?

The Shack is FAR from a Christian book. I'd say it's pretty heretical and not something a Christian should read.

it's just that you generally take the liberal side of every issue, that was my point... but like you said in another thread... that's off topic. lol

Have I read the book? Are you kidding? I wouldn't post an article on it on my website without reading it! Every book I've written about I've read, very carefully.

Not only did I read it, but I made notations in the book and carefully documented everything I said. Then, my pastor looked it over (that was my idea).

The fact that it's fiction is irrelevant; the author makes God the main character, therefore, as a Christian, he is obligated to present an accurate view of the Trinity, which he doesn't.

God clearly wants us to think of Him as male. The fact that He is spirit does not negate that.

I wonder if it from people who fear what they have heard about PDC?

Can you explain what you mean by that?

That would for sure ensure the end of the SBC in a few years by the self preservationists.

"It is a great Christian book" means that it is theologically sound. Yet it is not.

As for the idea of him portraying God the Father as human - man OR woman - it is wrong. Is God to be made into His creation?? Yes, Jesus came as a human but God the Father is not human, He has never been human nor will He ever be. Instead of seeing God as the Almighty, we see him as some black chick. Yeah - way to show the One who has always been and to represent Him in all of His glory, power and might.

Marcia, I am thankful that God has gifted you in this area. It takes a special person to be able to do what you do and read all the garbage and false teachings that it takes to alert the rest of us of the dangers that are out there.
I would not be able to do it. Reading that stuff would get into my head and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get it out.

    God bless you. :wavey:

Knowing the truth of scripture will expose every counterfeit. It is imperative that people study scripture and not spend time on worthless books that are nothing more than story books. If anyone goes into bookstores it is clear the number of story books being sold versus the number of high quality reference books.
