Yes, but why limit ecumenical concern only to those who wear the label "evangelical"? Should we not also strive for harmony, where possible, with the mainstream Protestant churches and even the catholic churches, western and eastern? I recognize that there are sharp and critical differences that cannot be glossed over, but it seems we would be settling for only half a loaf to focus only on the self-identified evangelicals.

The work of Stephen Harmon at Samford University comes to mind when I think of what it means for a Baptist to participate in ecumenical ties.

Perhaps that will be volume II. My guess is that in this book he wanted to emphasis evangelicals. I expect he would agree with you.

Just because there are others in the world who use the name Baptist does not mean that I should be in cooperation with them. I'm more interested in substance than titles.

There are some "Baptists" who should get honest and stop using the term.

And who would these be? I'm not trying to start a debate, just curious who who you think should drop the name.

Oh, come on! You can do better than that. Give us some names. I won't challenge you on it.

    For starters those who have:

Abandoned the belief in the separation of church and state ... example, those who support government school voucher programs for religious schools

Those who have abandoned the belief that the Bible is sufficient and that creeds are needed and who use them to fire professors, force people to sign them before being hired, etc.

If a govt gives vouchers for non-religious schools, then they are obliged to permit the vouchers for religious school - esp when many public schools have went off the deep end. Christian Parents have the right to send their kids to a school with high moral and educational standards.

BTW, I believe in separation of church and State (or Commonwealth) I want the govt to keep its nose out of the business of the church!!!

PS, I believe Zenas was specifically asking for Baptist denominations that do not meet your standards.

You continue to show your ignorance as to what a creed is. And signing an agreement to correct doctrine has nothing to do with a reliance on scripture. You are lost in your reasoning.

OK..I'll take the bait and call out some denominations and churches.

    American Baptist Churches USA
    Westboro Baptist Church
    Alliance of Baptists
Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists
    Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
    Baptist World Alliance
    Progressive National Baptist Convention

There's plenty more that I wish would drop the "Baptist" label, but I don't have time to list them all now.

There are some conservative Baptist churches in this group.

Then they should disassociate themselves with that liberal organization.

I don't think these are the groups Crabtownboy has in mind. Based on what he has said so far without naming names, Crabtown thinks the conservative takeover of the SBC has been unBaptistic in its approach. He is probably right, although the takeover halted a steady drift toward liberal social thought in the SBC. When you get down to it, there were four things that brought about the conservative takeover:

    1. Allegorizing much of the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament.

    2. Women as pastors.

    3. Failure to denounce the homosexual lifestyle.

    4. Failure to appoint conservatives to board and committees. This was not a deliberate systematic shutout like the conservatives used once they gained power, but a shutout nonetheless.

There are many very conservative Bible believing American Baptist Churches on the west coast. A number of them have pastors who graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary.

As I said before, then they should disassociate themselves with the liberal ABC.

Well that is an interesting list
    1. Since much of the OT is written in poetry form, some entire books, it makes sense to not interpret them literally.

    2. A true Baptist church can call whomever they want, that's the point of being Baptist. Besides there are many very conservative scholars who believe women should be allowed to be pastors

    3. Really, you are going to trot out that old line.... please.

    4. A shutout by any other name is not a shutout
