US Militray Pay Schedule

    US MILITARY PAY CHART

    A Private E-1 starts at $1399.50 / month
    A promotion to E-2 gives him a pay raise of $169.20 per month - avg raise of $39.04 per week.

    This does not include housing or rations (food).

    Not a bad pay for a teenager.

    An E-3 over 2 years makes $1753.50 / month ( $404.65 / week)

    I went to Korea as a Captain and received $80.00 per month pay, plus $30.00 airborne allowance and another $30.00 called risk allowance.....free room and board! On the street in those days, an average pay was between $30.00 and $50.00 weekly.

    Amazing! I should sign up again!

    So if I get this right, an entry level position - with no education or experience required -- starts at about $17,000 per year. When you include housing and food, that probably moves the salary to $25,000 - $30,000 per year. Also, I think that includes free medical care, which is probably worth several thousand $$ more.

    An E-2 provides a $2,000/year increase and an E-3 provides a $4,000 increase compared to the entry level.

    Here is the link for housing allowance

    It is based on location and rank
    here are some examples

    RANK.... SYRACUSE ....FT DRUM ...... FORT HOOD

    E-1.......$920..............$1052...........$880
    E-5......$1052.............$1121............$948
    E-7......$1296.............$1413...........$1179

    Of course, if you live in post housing, you do not receive BAQ, but all your rent and utilities are free.

    According to this PDF link, an enlisted man receives $323.87 a month for rations. An officer receives $223.04 a month. This is one - if not the only allowance, that an officers is lower than an enlisted.


    And here are some other allowances you may be entitled to

    Keep in mind that BAQ and rations are tax free.
    Many GI like to re-up in a combat zone, because it would be tax free. Think of it, getting a $20,000 bonus and no tax!!!

    Great pay for a person with no sellable skills who wants to go to foreign countries, meet new people, and kill them.

    While in the military, I was in no less than three foreign countries and I never killed anyone.

    Sure upon joining the Army they may not have a skill, but evidently, you are not aware of the excellent training these men receive

    Driving a Tank for example is a lot more than just turning the ignition control. Modern day tanks are totally computer control!

    Bill, I'm shocked and offended that you would say such a thing, especially as I have two brothers currently serving in the military. This is a terrible way to describe fellow citizens willing to put their lives on the line to defend our freedom.

    As for the pay schedule, when bullets are wizzing by your head, causing you to lose your hearing, if not your limbs and life, I'm sure the pay is inadequate. Our ball players, "entertainers," politicians, etc. make much more money than this and many of them are practically worthless.

    Does that go for police officers too? Take some kid off the street, send him to a police academy, hand him a pistol.

    And a cop makes a lot more (on the average) according to this link

    Anyone who can't see the difference in purpose between their local police and the US Marines must not be living in the US.

    But yes, the reported pay scale that is a decent median pay.

    Did they sign up to defend the US or to fight minidictators around the world?

    I'm willing to defend the US but what has that to do with Iraq and all our South and Central American wars? We can do all the defending necessary on our north and south borders and at the 300 mile limit.

    I propose a US Foreign Legion for those who wish to fight commercial wars around the world and to transfer those who wish to defend the US to national guards. And yes, the original primary duty of the Navy was to keep the sea lanes open . . . not doing to well in that mission, are they?

    Where were you when Hitler was trying to conquer the world? You could have temporarily saved a lot of lives. Then, you wouldn't be enjoying the freedom you have now either.

    You think a military person doesn't pay the price for killing even one person abroad? Surprise! We pay for it every day of our lives, and we are reminded everytime another soldier is killed trying to defend freedom.
