    Happy 500th Birthday!

What did he do for Christianity?

Get a Free Copy of Calvin’s Institutes!

Second, Libronix is giving away the Beveridge translation of Calvin’s Institutes through the end of the month.
To get your free book, you’ll need three things:

1.a copy of the Libronix Digital Library System installed on your PC or Mac
2.a Logos.com account with a credit card on file
3.a Libronix Customer ID that is connected to your Logos.com account
Here are the steps to follow to get all set up:

Step 1: Download and install Libronix for Windows. (Mac users can purchase the Mac version of the engine, or buy a Mac base package.)
If you already have Libronix up and running on your computer, jump to the third step.

Step 2: Activate Libronix. When you do, you’ll create a Libronix Customer ID (usually your email address, if you enter it).
You can find your Libronix Customer ID by going to Help > About Libronix DLS.

Step 3: Create a Logos.com account. If you already have one, just log in.

Step 4: Make sure that your Libronix Customer ID is associated with your Logos.com account. Go to My Account, enter your Libronix Customer ID from Step 2, and click “Confirm.” If it’s already there, no need to do anything.

Step 5: “Buy” the Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin. Go to the page and click “Add to Cart,” or just add it straight to your cart from here, and then make sure to add the CALVIN-500 coupon code to your cart and click “Update Cart.” Proceed through the checkout process and then click “Submit Order.” If you don’t have a credit card on file, you’ll need to enter your credit card information. Don’t worry. You won't be charged. It’s an unfortunate inconvenience in our current checkout system, and we hope to change it at some point.

Step 6: Unlock and download your new book. If you’re on a Windows machine, just click the orange “Unlock & Download” button. If you’re on a Mac, just synchronize your licenses (Tools > Library Management > Synchronize Licenses) and manually put the book file in your resources folder (Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Libronix DLS/Resources on the startup volume).

Step 7: Start using your new book! Open Libronix, open My Library, then type Institutes to find it. Double-click it to open it.

    I should get the institutes.

Also of interest to this thread, John Calvin is on the front page of Wikipedia

Yes, my friend, that is true. But the libronix system allows you to include the "Institutes" in any search you do. So, it is more usable, perhaps.

    Blessings,

    The Archangel

PS. I hope you are doing very well.

Well I bought the cake and am eating while reading Institutes of the Christian Religion.

Happy birthday John (or Jean)! We are a stronger Church because of you!

Maybe we could get him a picture of Michael Servetus to hang above the altar while he baptizes infants.

I believe in the total sovreignty of God, but it is beyond me of all the people that ever believed that doctrine, why that name was chosen.

I just knew this thread would invite the sort of low
life remarks as we see from the above.

    Yeah, I know.

What does that mean? Your remarks in your previous post were base.

Why not --based on your authority?

Ok, you've achieved a new low Mr. SN. His worst enemies of his lifetime never stooped as low as you have -- congrats.

Who in the world is talking about a "sacred postion" in this thread?! Your imagination is getting the best of you. Please deal with what folks actually say.

John Calvin was a (not "the") gift to the Church. If you disagree you are not in the least familiar with the body of his work or Church History -- and you take a lot of your freedoms for granted.

I've spent some time reading 'Institutes' this evening too.

Whether or not you follow Jean Cauvin's teachings, no one can deny the powerful force his arguments had upon the study of theology.

Judge him not by todays standards but by the standards of his place in history.

I would not have measured up so well.

    Of course I am.

It's not an either/or proposition. John Calvin was a saint as are all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Or are you working from a Roman Catholic perspective?

Just because I think he was "such a great guy" doesn't mean that I endorse every single item of all his beliefs. I'm with Spurgeon on this one. CHS said something to the effect that he agreed with John Calvin in the main. I would say the same thing with respect to the overall doctrines of CHS, John Owen, BB Warfield, Herman Hoeksema and AW Pink also. I agree with them in the main -- not with every particular.

You absolutely can't deny the impact of the Reformed point of view. This country's greatest theological mind (Jonathan Edwards) was supremely influenced by them. To deny Calvin's impact is like saying Henry Ford was just a vagabond.

I don't worship the man, nor do I agree with a ton of his points...but I am thankful for his life and ministry for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. :)

Plus its a great reason to buy some cake!

Also keep in mind that the Institutes were written early on in Calvin's life. He did make considerable changes, for the better, in later writings. One should not read the Institutes without comparing his commentary on Romans.

Calvin had many personal faults, no doubt. He wanted government to rule as its own theocracy and called for very severe punishments to those who refused to follow.

Calvinists, of the Baptist flavour, certainly make theological differences, but on the main, we quite agree with Calvin as we do with some theologians before him. We differ on covenant theology that includes infant baptism, church polity and practice, but on the sovereignty of God and the aligned doctrines, we have no quarrel.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Maybe the post is too harsh considering the culture of the times. The idea that today in this country of putting someone to death because they do not agree with whoever is in power at the time, seems the essence of pure evil to me. Maybe at the time in the 16th Century, this was the accepted practice. If we were condemned to death because we did not agree with Rick Warren or Joel Olsteen or King Obama, how many of us would be left?

There is a thread on the other denominations sections about baptismal statements form Luther, Knox, Wesley, and Calvin. What surprised me was none came close to our belief that does not link baptism to salvation. All of them to varying degrees believed that baptism either forgave sins or effected salvation.

John Calvin is due credit for his doctrines of grace. It is a curious mix to have one area so accurate and another so far off base.

A lot of good theologians specialize in a given area and come up short in other areas. There is only so much any person can learn in totality.

    Cheers,

    Jim
