Hillbilly Talk ( Or Modern Cockney) ?

    Now I realize that the speech we find in the KJVs was standard English back then -- but you'd think that Paris, Blayney or Webster would have modernized it a bit.

    Ecclesiastes 2

    Verse 4 : I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards.
    Verse 5 : I made me gardens and orchards
    Verse 6 : I made me pools of water
    Verse 7 : I got me servants and maidens
    Verse 8 : I gathered me also silver and gold

    It Ain't "Hillbilly"!

    Hey now!

    Wait just a minute, here!

    Dr. Paris and/or Dr. Blaney did 'modernize' the language and spelling a great deal in the KJV, as we have it today, as also did Dr. Webster somewhat in the WBT. (Dr. Noah Webster had nothing to do with any translation and/or modernization of the language and spelling of the KJV, although some decidedly "UNauthorized" and later American emendations of the KJV may well have been influenced by his labors with and in the 'Americanized' English language.)
    Comparing only a couple of these verses will show some differences. I included Dr. Robert Young's YLT in order to show that the sense is apparently therein for the personal pronoun usage. -
    Still, the thread title is somewhat misleading, IMO.

    For as one who is a genuine "card-carryin'" hillbilly as well as a "Real" Redneck (and not one of the "store-bought" types), I recognize a decided difference in these dialects and that known as Cockney. ;)

    The 1560 Geneva Bible translated Ecclesiastes 2:4 as
    "I have made my great works: I have built me houses: I have planted me vineyards."

    The NKJV translated Ecclesiastes 2:4 as
    "I made my works great. I built myself houses, and planted myself vineyards."

    For some further comparison of Ecc. 2:4

    I made gorgious fayre workes, I buylded me houses, and planted vynyardes: (MCB)

    I made gorgious faire workes: I builded my houses, and planted vineyardes. (BIS)

    I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards; (DBY)
