Are you botheres by nonchristians in public office?

    Every now and then, someone comments about a person in publc office who is a Christian. I'm grateful that we have people of faith in public office. But are we bothered if a person in office is not a Christian? We've had a lot of people, many of them famous Americans, who were not Christians, who are considered honorable men by us.

    I am bothered that there are unsaved folks period.

    But you are right. Jimmy Carter claimed to be a Christian, but he turned out to be horrible. Thomas Jefferson denied Christ's deity, but was a great leader.

    I would say that Jefferson applied biblical precepts to his leadership better than Carter did.

    Like Curtis, "I am bothered that there are unsaved folks period". However since there are unsaved people we have to accept that they will land themselves in positions of power. I would argue that, in modern America, it is very hard for a true Christian to get elected to national office.

    No, I am not bothered by unbelievers in public office. I'd rather have a believer, but it is not a litmus test. It's not even the first test for me in terms of voting for a politician.

    I agree with all the posts so far. Bro Curtis makes a good point. Some of the most virtuois men, such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin, were all nonchristians, and probably did a better job upholding civic Christian principles better than some Christians in office.

    For me, I take the "no religious test" clause of the Constitution seriously. A person's personal religious affiliation is not a factor in deciding whom to cast my vote for.

    No one is saying that at all. AQ is a terrorist organization. I may disagree politically with some of these guys but they would never, ever stand with a terrorist.

    I cannot speak for them, but we are saying that just because a person is a believer doesn't make them fit to vote for. I would use as an illustration Jimmy Carter. Some of these others would cite George Bush. But just because a man is a Christian makes him fit to be an elected official.

    When a person makes a big deal out of being a "Christian" whatever I hang on to my wallet. Been screwed to many times.

    MP, you need to read the OP!

    Personally, I am not bothered if a non-Christian is holding office as long as he holds to high moral values.

    In fact, wouldn't it be a blessing to lead a politician to the Lord! :applause: I have been involved in politics for some time, but as I look back, I have not used the opportunities as I should have. I will be looking for the election this comming fall. I usually attend the Republican election night party.
