I don't think it wise for the President of the United States to be drinking alcohol at all. Throughout the scriptures we see that God ordered those in the highest positions of leadership to not drink any alcohol at all. Now this applied to our spiritual leaders, but if God tells His spiritual advisors for the people to abstain from alcohol then it stands there is a good reason for those in positions such as the President's to be perfectly alert for a crisis could arise in a swift moment.

Just one mug of beer can impair the mind taking that fine tuned sharpness and dulling it even just a bit.

Secondly, Obama has set his sights on obesity and the toll it takes on lives and health care cost. Does he have any idea the cost alcohol has caused the human race? Both in lives destroyed and health care cost? Yet he promotes beer drinking to the country and to all the children who watch him and look up to him.

I have several alcoholics in my family tree. I seen the devistation to spouses and children. I have seen the huge medical toll on their lives. Yet Obama thinks nothing of promoting alcohol and he should know that even children are watching him. I preach to my kids how destructive alcohol is so they should never even touch it because of what it can lead to. And let's face it, there is not one, no not one teenager or twenty something year old who drinks a beer because they are "just" thirsty, nor do they set out to just drink one. Alcohol is a drug of choice to alter the mind. I have been there and done that. I know beer drinkers in their late thirties and up who have reduced their drinking to just one with the guys or one after doing the chores, but they did not begin that way. Young people drink to get buzzed or smashed and their is a large percentage of them that will grow up to let the drinking destroy their relationships and their health.

I do not preach God forbids alcohol. But I do preach the facts of a life involving alcohol and warn others of the consequences for going down that path. I point out the death and destruction that alcohol has paved throughout history.

My step-daughter at this moment sits in jail for a third DUI. Her second DUI involved her crossing the center line and hitting a man head on. Her car caught on fire and the man she hit pulled her to safety. She could have killed him and would be doing years in the state prison. By the grace of God she didn't kill him but continued to drink even after spending three months in lock up. She now sits in jail for her third offense. She was given one year this time and has six months to go. I praise God for putting her in jail for a year. She is His child and knows that God chasens those He loves. She is doing well and has poured herself into His word and His love. Pray for her please, the enemy desires to have us all and the weak and the young are the most vulnerable. She is twenty-five.

Let's live in reality here. 99% of beer drinking begins with children and it is done for effect, not for a social one and done. If anything Obama should be promoting abstinence from beer. No one can stop it, but we don't need to be promoting it from the oval office when children are looking up to a leader such as the President. Drinking cannot be stopped, but it's curses should be exposed and the children and people warned that it is best to never even drink one!

Amen to that. It is obviously not a problem with him, so the way I look at it is that its his business, not mine. What I do not like in the least is degrading the Presidency to a media circus where the whole world watches as the leader and second in command make a stage show of a trivial event. In the first place, it was a local story, if that. It had no significance or deserve national attention. Obama is the one that got himself involved in a local affair. The whole thing is a disgrace, and the beer is the least of what is wrong with this situation.

If Obama just had to get involved and have the parties over for a beer, then why not do it privately away from the news media.

If one wants to be critical of Obama, or, for that matter, any particular politicians, I'm sure there are plenty of more legitimate concerns than this.

In and of itself, there is nothing inappropriate about a person consuming alcohol, be they a POTUS or Joe the Plumber. It is neither wise nor unwise for a POTUS to consume alcohol

As for the claim that scripture adminishes people in leadership from drinking, where the heck is that? Especially given that Jesus consumed as part of the standard Jewish diet. In fact, when Jesus ate and drank with sinners (which he did often), the religious leaders accused him of being a glutton and a drunkard.

There was a certain spiritual significance of consuming food & drink with someone. By doind so, a person demonstrated that the other person was his equal. By Obama inviting these men to enjoy a drink with him, he is likewise calling them his equal, and vice versa.

How, I can easily come up with a list of concerns regarding Obama, but this is not among that list. I concur with Aaron. Obama drinking a beer is the least of our worries.

Now I am not a prohibitionist, but I see no value in drinking. Rather, I see a lot of hurt that comes about as a result of it. If Obama wants to drink a beer on his own in private, I don't really care. I'd rather he didn't, but he has that right. However, I don't like that our leader is publicly proclaiming having some folks over for some brews. I'd rather our leader was a better example for young people.

"As for the claim that scripture adminishes people in leadership from drinking, where the heck is that?"

Prov. 31.4 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Pro 31:5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."

Context, context context!!!! First, Prov 31 is not the Lord speaking commands, it is a list of sayings of Lemuel, king of Massa, who got these sayings from his mother. Second, Prov 31 is not prohibiting consumption of alcohol. It is an admonition of drunkenness (and specific to losing ones' ability to make sound judgements). Note that the verse that follows practically permits getting drunk if you want to forget your misery, something which scripture elsewhere does not permit.

I'm not arguing for or against an interpretation of that scripture regarding alcohol, but are you saying that that isn't a command from the Lord? I guess the rest of Proverbs isn't either since it says that these are the "proverbs of Solomon, son of David..." Then you've got things written by Paul, Peter, James, John, Jude, etc. What about them? Are those just some sayings someone came up with?

Yes, context is important, why don't you try using the one in which I posted. I said nothing about all that you spout. :wavey:

Proverbs isn't a list of commands. It's a list of wise sayings which have spiritual significance. This passage isn't saying "don't consume alsohol if you're in a leadership position". It's saying "it is unwise to be drunk while making leadership decisions"
Again, context context context. When Peter, Paul, et al speak from the position of giving an admonition, command, or directive, then it should be taken as such. In areas they're not, it shouldn't.
If that's the case, then I'm going to go out and get drunk, because the Bible says it's okay: "Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. " Prov 31:6-7

I happen to agree I think it's tacky, especially in reagrds to involving the media. I was simply addressing the claim it's scripturally forbidden.

As was said before, I think we have bigger worries in regards to Obama than this.

That's twice I've agreed with LE in as many days. I need to pinch myself!

The problem is you are saying this isn't a command from the Lord, but rather just some sayings from a man. That's wrong. That book, like the other 65 that make up the bible, are given by divine inspiration.

AMEN! Glad you observe the 613 positive and negative statements.

My favorite NT commandment, "I'm going fishing."

I am. Drunkenness can boast more innocent victims than almost any other vice. School kids smokin' in the boys' room is nuthin'!

Again, context. The chapter even starts by stating it is a list of sayings. Verse one says "The sayings of King Lemuel—an oracle his mother taught him" (oracle referrs to a poem, often sung).
That's certainly your free will, but prohobition is certainly not a scriptural mandate. Consumption of alcohol is scripturally permissible. Drunkenness is not. There is a difference.

Back on topic, there's nothing scriptually wrong with a POTUS having a beer with some others. I don't object to him doing so. I object to the manner in which it is done, and for his getting involved in the situation in the first place.

They come by divine inspiration. Do you deny this?
