People born in those places have the advantages of American citizenship (except voting if that be an advantage) but don't pay American income taxes. American companies in Puerto Rico don't pay income taxes on profits gained there, are not subject to enviro and other federal legislation.

One would think that under those circumstances they would have a thriving economy and the workers would be doing just fine. They have the economic conditions that Conservatives need to prosper in his world. Can anyone explain why they do not prosper under the conditions that Conservatives demand for themselves?

When you say "advantages of American citizenship" you are primarily speaking of "welfare".

That is probably the crux of the problem.

    Bingo.

And let's be more accurate, and go apples-to-apples here: what states are in the most dire straits? Is it any coincidence that it is the states which are the most brutal with regards to taxes?

Typical of liberalism, you try to boil down a very complex issue to a simplistic formula because you fail to understand the realities of economics. You can't do that. It never works. Economies are complex.

The truth is that in some places, the recent enforcement of the minimum wage laws has killed jobs. Factories stand empty and people are unemployed because of it. How do you like that? Would you like to be one of those people who had a way to live but no longer do because the government got involved to "make things better"?

The other reasons why jobs go to other States or Commonwealths and even overseas -

    1. excessive government regulations
    2. excessive demands by unions
    3. excessive difficulty in firing unproductive employees
    4. unnecessary law suits -
    5. excessive insurance rates (due in part to #4)

lets see, did I forget any...

Its funny how some demand all their rights, but are not concerned about their responsibilities

Right! So why are manufacturers not going to Puerto Rico where those conditions are met?

The tax breaks for corportations were phased out over a ten year period beginning in 1998 so there would be no tax advantage to moving there.

It takes more then little or no taxes to have a viable work and manufacturing environment. Work force size as an example.

True - such as proximty to your market and resources.

It would seem that shipping expense both to get the raw materials in and your product out would be a deterent to setting up shop in these distant island locations.

Let's not forget the biggest reason companies jump overseas, labor costs. Americans, wherever they live, wouldn't and can't (minimum wage laws) work for a few dollars a day.

The biggest reason many people living in an otherwise seemingly 'conservative' economy aren't thriving in prosperity is:

It is not as conservative as some would think:
Corporations have bought up the resources, possessed the best land, and oppress the work force and controlled or eliminated the competition.

Even in business..... it was never the intent of our 'conservative economy' to consolidate industry and business to avoid competition.

PR has 150,000 unemployed workers a couple hundred miles off Florida - much more convenient to ship to and from Red China. Hong Kong and Singapore have so many more natural resources than PR. Right?

    This is only partly true.

The residents born in American Samoa (and Swains Island) are American Nationals, but are not American citizens.

Those born in Guam, the Virgin Islands (US), and the Commonwealths of the Northern Mariana Islands and Puerto Rico, are citizens of the United States, just as those born in the District of Columbia, the 50 states or in any American Embassy, or on a US military base (at least if the child of a US citizen), in another country.

'Tax policy' is a different issue from citizenship, however.

    Convenient for who?

Who is making the products in China?

What are the products being manufactured?

What are the manufacturing processes being employed?

What are the skill levels necessary to manufacture the products?

What natural resources are they using and where are they coming from?

Where are the products being shipped?

I cannot say if you are right or not without the details.

Offhand, I can't think of anything that could be manufactured and shipped to the US from China cheaper than from PR. My point is that scab working conditions and no federal taxes does NOT necessarily produce a happy and richer work force.

150,000 people, China has that many in one apartment building, it's not even close. Don't forget the labor costs, a few bucks a day compared to several dollars an hour makes a HUGE difference.

There are also the lack of environmental laws in China. Think Gilded Age.

Oh, yes, bill...and now the real point comes out. Another pro-union diatribe.

I have three words for you:

    U.
    A.
    W.

    Oh, and three more:

    Chrysler
    General (or Government)
    Motors

    That about sums it up.

That you can not think of anything off hand does not mean that it is not so.

There are numerous factors besides one's tax rate that contribute to an economy. Lowering the tax rate or easing particular regulations can contribute to a healthier economy, but they are by no means the sole factors in a healthy economy.

Neither can you think of any.
