What's the point to an unspoken prayer request?

I dunno, maybe to ask folks to pray with them about something they cannot (for whatever reason) reveal?

When bullets are flying over your head and bombs bursting about you, there are many unspoken prayers. I believe God got the message!

    Cheers,

God knows the request, no need for people to know, prayer requests are often food for gossip mills.

If you're involved in a community you trust there should be an understanding that prayer requests are personal.

If you can't bring voice to a specific need for fear of gossip or personal injury...leave and get into a community you trust.

Unspoken prayer requests are weird imho. I had someone do it yesterday. We were fielding requests in our small group time and they said "I have an unspoken." Awkward silence followed. Someone stiffled a laugh in the back of the group. It's just weird.

Seriously I just don't get them either.

I think unspoken prayer requests are very important. There are very, very private things that just cannot be announced in church or in mixed company.

If your sister and brother-in-law are struggling over his recently discovered pornography habits and they are willing to work, biblically, on their marriage and need prayer, I don't think details like this should be announced to the church.

If your teenage daughter is found to be sexually active and she needs prayer for repentance, I don't think one needs to stand up in church and announce it.

Whenever people (which is very rarely at my church) announce an unspoken prayer request, it comes from brokeness, shame (either on their part or someone's elses part) and a struggle just to get the words out. My heart breaks for people who cannot even name their struggles verbally.

I pray for God's will to overtake the situation and for Christ to rebuke the devil's influence. I don't have to know what the problem is.

I like to know what I am praying for in people's lives, but since I am NOT the one answering the prayers nor supernaturally bringing restoration, healing, and divine intervention, I don't HAVE to know the details.

I had no idea that there were Christians who looked upon unspoken prayer requests as something negative. Maybe I need to get out more.

Why do you think people come to the pastor in absolute privacy over personal matters of concern if the church people were so pure of gossip?

    Cheers,

    Jim

Unspoken requests are very important. I have quickly learned that whenever I have health issues, not to specify at prayer meeting because I get tired of all the nosey questions and unwanted "advice." For some folks, it's not a gossip issue, but it IS another occasion to tout all their experiences and knowledge to the person who simply wants prayer, not horror stories or advice.

When I had gallbladder surgery, church folks couldn't just pray for me and leave it at that. They HAD to know who the doctor was, when was I scheduled (so they could call and disturb me during recovery :BangHead:), which hospital was I in, inform me their relative almost died from that surgery and if i'd just lose weight or not eat this or that, maybe I wouldn't need surgery and blah blah blah.

No thank you, never again. From now on I simply say "unspoken!" We need to learn to respect the privacy of others. God is the only one who needs to know all of our personal details.

have learned from expereince, you can not trust everyone in a church, you certainly can not trust a crowd of people with personal information about your life. I guess I wouldn't be getting prayer in your church if people are laughed at instead of prayer being taken seriously, it would definatly be time to move on.

I had an assistant pastor who once preached that unspoken prayer requests were a "sin". He twisted Scriptures (I cannot remember which ones) until they screamed for mercy to "prove" his point. He did not last long in our church- his choice, and God's- not mine.

I am perfectly all right with them- I like what Jim1999 said. Some things are between me and God and I just need the brethren to lift me in prayer for whatever it is.

But what's really the point, why say anything at all.

    Why say anything at all?

Because you or someone you love desperately needs the prayers of brothers and sisters in Christ and because the details are waaaaay too intimate to share.

If you don't get it after it's been explained here, don't worry about. Just move on.

Surely, SURELY, Brother ShotGunWillie, you have been in prayer before and God causes someone to pass through your mind over and over for no apparent reason and you immediately pray for them. God didn't tell you the details of their needs, then, did He?

It's the same thing with unspoken prayer requests.

But....if you don't like them, then don't worry about it.

Do you ever pray for people without really knowing what their needs are?

    What's the point?

Sometimes there are people who think you should always speak your prayer requests and press and press and press and, instead of saying "shut up and leave it alone", it is better to say "unspoken."

The problem I have with some pastors is what you thought was kept in confidence makes its way to the pulpit to "straighten you out"!

Another thing taking it to the pulpit does is let the flesh have the upper hand and suggest to the listeners something about another member causing suspicions.

Been there done that. I make "unspoken" requests and even that raises the suspicions of those on a witch hunt!

The answers in this thread show a definite lack of preaching against busy-bodies in the church.

No ownder I dont get to preach much in our church, I PREACH AGAINST busy-bodies!

I can pray for the earnest request for that person who wishes it between them and God alone.
