A few weeks our pastor told us about a revival that would start later this month between the 23rd and 26th between the area churches with a evangelist coming. 2 weeks ago we had a mens meeting and were discussing paying the preacher and the question came up about giving offering before and during the revival. The argument I made was that people shouldn't feel pressured to give unless they want to and the service shouldn't be stopped for a special offering. and instead a plate or jar should be at the back of the church so that people who want to give can give freely. This was voted down by everyone else and it was decided that today 2 offerings would be given one for church expenses and then at the end having a special offering after service for this pastor and on top of that in order to take role the sunday school has envelopes for offering so the question is When did church become about the offering and not about the service? It just seems unfortunate to me and was wondering your opinions

I have seen it done all kinds of ways.

The one I prefer is to NOT have an offering taken up at all during revival. If funds need to be raised to support the revival, do it before hand by special offerings a month or two before the revival.

But this is not a hill I would be willing to die on. And it may vary according to the culture of the community.

Off on a tangent (but then it wouldn't be the BB if we didn't do that) ... I have a friend who refused to take money for leading revivals. His position was that he was on the staff of a church, was being paid by that church, and should not therefore take extra money beyond actual expenses.

He was not embraced in that by his fellow ministers around our area!

I agree, I'm uncomfortable with having mroe than one offering during the service.

On a sidenote, when we first began our church, we didn't have an offering. We had an offering box at the back of the church, and invited people to leave the their tithes and offerings in the back at the end of the service. In spiritual theory, it was the right model, but in practicality, it wasn't: it made it more difficult for people to give and tithe.

Sine we are small, we also just put the basket out.

However, we do not give thithes, we use the NT guidance of II Cor 9:7
    Opps, thats for another thread

The offering is part of the service because giving to the work of God is also part of worship.:godisgood:

What is interesting to me is I have seen all kinds, but I agree with TinyTim. Why even take up an offering? Just do it.

I also have attended "revivals" where it wasn't necessarily a preacher preaching, but like a guest evangelical magician who pumped for offerings.

    Ugh. Stop already.

I tend to hold to this one. Sometimes there seems to be so much pomp and circumstance around the offering, and that ought not be.

Is this the most practical or possibly best method? It probably isn't. It may give the apperance of money grubbing. But, I seriously doubt that's the intention. I would find it hard to believe that your fellow deacons want a revival that's all about money. And, I'm sure that most folks won't even think about it being that way. Plus, there is nothing Biblically wrong with what was decided. At least I can't think of one. So, as member of the deacon body, where unity is so vital, even though you may disagree, support it cheerfully. Please don't go around the church potty mouthing this. As TinyTim suggested, it isn't a hill worth dying on.
