Historical note of 'Fork' Church 'Homecoming' and Anniversary

    Tomorrow, August 23, 2009, my home church, the Forks of Dix River Baptist Church, of Lancaster, KY will celebrate our homecoming and our 227th year, since we were constituted as a local church.

    We were organized in 1782 while KY was still a part of VA, and 10 years before KY became a state, and are the third oldest extant Baptist Church "West of the Alleghenies" in the United States.

    May the 'Fork' Church always remain faithful to the Word of God, as she has for these years, until our Lord's return.

    Congratulations, Ed. I'm sure Forks of Dix River has made a tremendous difference for the cause of Christ. By the way, how far are you from Buena Vista Baptist Church?

    If you are referring to the Buena Vista Baptist Church in Garrard Co., KY, we are located about 7-8 miles apart.

    There are at least two other churches in KY known as Buena Vista, with one in Somerset and the other in Owensboro that I have found.

    We are located some 35 miles So. of Lexington, KY., on Hwy. US-27.

    Yes, the one in Garrard County. I wasn't aware of the other two. And I would venture to say they don't pronounce their name as if it were spelled "Buna Vista."

    Ed, the church I serve in Paducah can't hold a candle to yours in terms of age. It was established in 1891.

    We have the minutes of every business meeting from 1902 through today. Don't know what happened to the first ten years of minutes. But they are a gold mine of historical information. The church clerks wrote in a terse narrative, sometimes including direct quotes from the pastor or members.

    We can follow a change in both the culture and the church life over those years. Up until the early 1930s, there were no standing committees. If there was a job to be done, the church appointed an ad hoc committee, and when they completed their task, they reported back to the congregation and were discharged.

    Church discipline was routine and regular. Those minutes include the disfellowshipping of a man for gambling in 1928. His sin? Investing in the stock market

    Another man was disfellowshipped for dancing--with his own wife. He refused to apologize and they churched him. She apologized and was forgiven. Thirty years later, when I went to that church as minister of music, that man was there--a senior deacon and much beloved by the congregation.

    I trust that the Forks of Dix church has preserved all the records it can. I imagine they're filled with little gold nuggets.
