Is anyone familiar with a Bible College/Seminary (other than CES) that uses the student/mentor approach? I have nothing against CES, I am just curious if there may be other programs available via distant learning. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Roy,

For full disclosure purposes, I am one of the CES mentors. I was wondering why you would want such a program? And have you looked at or taken seriously the CES program?

I would be glad to dialog with you about any questions or concerns you may have.

Newburgh uses it to an extent, but your studies are more rigid and you don't have anywhere near the flexibility of a CES. If you want a tailor-made program with your mentor of YOUR choice with a program of YOUR design, CES is it.

(Rhet, do I get my commission now or after?) :tongue3:

    Tom,

    I will pay you later.

Hey did you see my new "signature" update? Ain't I shameful??

You do know the old proverb do you not? "He that tooteth not his own horn, the same shall remain un-tooted!"

    Yes sir,
I have seriously looked into CES and have spoken to Dr. Walston numerous times by phone and by e-mail. He has always answered all of my questions in detail. CES is definitely an option for me. I was just curious if there may be any other programs out there like CES.

LBU, Louisiana Baptist University, has a similar option in the Doctor of Ministry program. You can create/develop your own curriculum under the supervision of the dean, who has an earned doctorate from one of the Southern Baptist seminaries. You develop your learning plan and dissertation idea under supervision, submit it for review and begin the work. The program requires at least 30 credit hours, 15 of which are course work and rest is the final written dissertation, which has to be at least 150 pgs., if I'm not mistaken. The next question/concern is whether you want a degree that is accredited or not.

I suppose the SATS research only degrees where the student works with one supervisor might fit into the general definition of a mentor program.

    Bill,

You might want to give some more backgound on SATS for the ones who may not know anything about it or your involvement with it.

The South African Theological Seminary offers distance only undergraduate degrees by coursework and masters' and D.Th degrees by research. The school is properly accredited and very reasonably priced.

I've been with SATS about three years being among 20 or so who grade undergrad coursework. I also, I think alone, evaluate the work done for the three bridging courses required to enter the MTh. if one lacks a BA in Bible/Theology. I also am one of several supervisors of MTh theses in Systematic Theology. I put in 20-25 hours weekly doing these activities. I'm a rather strict grader.

I'm very grateful to the Lord for His letting me do this.
