Question about the Irish

    I know this will sound ignorant, but will ask anyway. In Ireland, did Catholics and Protestants share surnames, or were some last names much more prevelant among one or the other denomination? In for instance, 18th & 19th century, could you tell from his name whether or not he was Protestant?
