New to this board and my wife & I became Baptists just this year. Our choice in Baptist churches was based on ignorance and proximity to our home. The Lord watched over us; we are well-fed from the pulpit and prayerfully believe we're in the right place for us. Our background was Presbyterian Church in America. We left PCA because of Biblical/doctrinal interpretations and social/political issues.
I would welcome suggestions on how learn about Baptist beliefs. I realize this is an enormous topic and believe my Pastor is correct when he advises "Just keep coming to meetings." But is there a text or course available for folks like me? Our Independent Baptist church uses KJV but apparently is not 100% strictly KJV only (just learned about that topic) and it is dispensationalist (learned about that this year as well). I bought an Old Scofield and have gotten nods of approval although my Bible Study teacher advised about the Gap Theory. My wife bought a Ryrie.

    Thanks! Rich

I like to think we have a solid Baptist base and we include a variety of different viewpoints and still maintain a good fellowship of believers. I thought our doctrinal statement would be a good base for you coming from a Presbyterian background.

Cheers, bless and welcome to the BB.

Thanks for sharing that. Simple and concise and straight to the point and to which I'm probably 99% in agreement with (cover page anyway, amazing isn't it?).

Kyredneck. Thanks. I like to think we cover the wide spectrum of evangelical Baptists without compromise. We can have some interesting discussions when we meet in convention and on the field, but we don't compromise fellowship in Christ. I have even pastored churches that were strongly dispensational and not had difficulties.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Welcome.

The Southern Baptist Convention has adopted The Baptist Faith and Message
as its basic doctrinal statement. With some possible exceptions, you'll find it reasonably compatible with the doctrinal statements of Independent Baptist churches--or other Baptist churches as well.

And while there are diverse views among Baptists in several areas, there is general agreement on what are called Baptist distinctives.
