What are your favorite hymns ? The ones you immediatly think about when the pastors asks " So, what will we sing now ? ".

I had to find out if those we sing existed, and finally found my favorites in their english (and often original) version :

    - How great thou art
    - Tell me the old, old story
    - Onward christian soldiers

Your pastor asks "What will we sing now??" LOL - I know atleast by Wednesday what's going to be sung on Sunday - otherwise my job would be TERRIBLE!! (I project the words on the screen).

One of my all time favorite hymns is "Before the Throne of God Above". I cry every time.

Yes, we nearly always choose the two last hymns to sing :) ... and a good occasion to sing those you like the most if you're fast enough to raise your hand :D

Guide Me oh Thou Great Jehovah
It Is Well with My Soul
    Blessed Assurance
and probably my all-time favorite - Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go - brings tears to my eyes each time I sing it.

    Favorite Hymn(s)

    "Love Lifted ME!"

"Wonderful Grace of Jesus!" You don't hear this one much any more. And it is not even found much in the new hymnals.

    I wonder why?

I like robust hymns with pithy texts:

    A Mighty Fortress
    Holy, Holy, Holy
Built on a Rock the Church Doth Stand
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation
    Jesus Calls Us
    Lift Every Voice and Sing

And, echoing another poster who wondered why one of his/her favorites was no longer in the hymnals, I don't find another favorite too often any more: Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life

I have so many favorites that I really can't narrow it down to one or two.

This morning, I guess I'd have to say "When Morning Gilds the Skies" (all 432 verses of it).

We've raised our children on hymns from day one and it's really amazing how much of Christian doctrine they've always understood, just picking them up from hymns.

I know that in my own experience, I love to keep an old hymnal by my bedisde and use it in my devotions. I also like to go to Cyberhymnal.net and just read the words of the great hymns and discover new hymns.

My wife is British, and brought with her the English Baptist hymnal used in the churches of her childhood. Wow, how many verses some of those hymns have? Can you hear us Americans now, "Let's sing the first, fifth, and eighteenth verses!"?

Yeah, I tend to lose track after eight or nine verses. Some of them are very long.
