Racist comments... Am I a racist?

    I was golfing in a neighborhood scramble about three years ago and one of the men in my foursome was a black man named Joe. Joe lived three houses up the street from me, he was a neighbor and we were casual friends. I've since moved away from the neighborhood and lost contact with all of the men from the area there.

    We were hitting our second shot on a par 4 from about a hundred yards out... a nice sand wedge distance. Chris shot first and had a beautiful shot, well-struck, but it went off to the left at a horrible angle, landing in a bunker. He was lined up incorrectly. Joe stepped up and struck his ball and hit the EXACT same shot as Chris, landing in the same bunker. We all had a chuckle at this and I made the comment... "Monkey see, monkey do." (I'll let you know everyone's reaction to the statement after I get some opinions.)

    This is VERY similar to a comment that Howard Cosell ended up retiring from sports broadcasting over.

    Was I a racist for saying that?

    No, unless you are politicallllllly corrrrect nut job.

    Odrama used a term in a speech that went by unnoticed that struck me quite odd and he used it quite easily as if common for himself to use. I don't recall what he was talking about but he was giving the idea of tinkering with something to make it better and he used the term jiggering :laugh:

    Chia pet put out an Odrama chia and that was racist so I would guess some would percieve your comment as well as mine as racist but don't thing they are. They stopped selling them to avoid the racist charge. Last week I did notice that they have come out with a patriotic set of chias including Odrama, Washington and Lincoln with the statue of liberty - of course she has a blinking tourch :thumbs: That should raise some howels as well.

    Based on the statement, alone, the answer is no.

    Racism, as I see it, has an underlying bias. I would suspect you would have said "monkey see, monkdy do" no matter who hit that shot.

    BTW, let me guess the reactions. Joe didn't think anything of it, maybe even laughed himself, but at least one and maybe both of the white guys were uncomfortable and told you so.

    As someone that is probably more racist than anyone on this board (hey just recognizing my faults) I am extremely careful as to what I say around colored folks for fear of saying something just like--guarding my every word. That you were comfortable enough to use a common phrase with this neighbor and not make the association until later means you were seeing past his color and treating him like the others.

    Just my 2 cents..

    Friends can joke. My best friend for years was black, we both used to joke each other about race. We could do that because we both knew we cared for each other with a brotherly love and weren't truly bigoted.

    Years ago I worked with a fellow of Polish descent. He told me more Polish jokes than I've ever heard from anybody else. He was secure with himself.

    And it's like that comedian who tells all the redneck jokes. If you are secure with yourself, you can laugh at yourself.
