Hello, I don't know if this is the right area if not wold some one please move it to the proper area.

I was at work today and some one seen me reading. I was reading my sunday leasons. I was as what I was reading and my reply (while showing him the book) was somthing that he should be reading to. That started a conversation with 4 of us. I started the whole thing off wrong as he caught me off gaurd. As we talked it lead to he said "No where in the bible dose it say that u have to go to church". I told him "There is and we just did it begaining of last month and if I could tell you where I would and will bring it in to you". At the time I didn't have my bible with me to point it out if I could remember where it was in the bible. I tryed to explain that point and it was neccicary for fellowship. We talked a little more about religion (mainly catholic) and was stoped to head to work.

My problem is I need to point it out and don't remember where it is in the bible can some one help me point him in the right direction.

By the way as it I work construction and they are some of the most stubbron when it comes to this. They just dont want to hear it and make it perfactly clear (unless u get them off gaurd like I did and they got me).

    Thanks for any help.

We often like to use Heb 10:25 - "not forsaking the Assembly of ourselves together"

Much of Paul's letters are written to churches, for church operation.

Lets pray for this man, that sees no need for church attendance. Is it possible he has had a very bad experience in a church before?

Hbr 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Here's another passage that may help:

Acts 2:41-42 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

In other words, they had Bible study together, they fellowshipped together, they ate together, and they prayed together.

Tom, you hit on exactly what I was going to. The fact that the church is specifically a plural word refering to those who have been called out shows 1) they are together and not out and about wandering around, and 2) they are together for a purpose.

You can not get away from the fact that we are to not only be in direct and constant fellowship with God but also with those whom God loves and called 'together' to form His church. The only way one can assume we do not need to go to church (literally 'be apart of the church or God's people') is that they do not understand who and what the church is.

The church is not a building but a people devoted to God and His purposes as well as each other.

Heb. 3:13, "But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called 'Today,' so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."

Mt. 18:20, "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."

Exactly, Allan. Over and over in the New Testament we have examples to follow. The 120 were assembled in the upper room at Pentecost. Most of the New Testament letters were written to congregations--the very word congregate means to meet together. Paul, in writing to the church at Corinth about their abuse of the Lord's Supper (I Cor 11) said in verse 18, said "For first of all, when ye come together in the church....."

One major characteristic of a church is that it comes together.

Even if you believe in the "universal church" there is a need for a local assembly.

Some will say, but I listen to Charles Stanley* every Sun morning. Great, but if you need one-one counseling, or even just a time of prayer; I wouldn't hold my breath for Dr Stanley or one of his assistants to show up at your house.

    Salty

ps * of course, this is not derogatory to wards "In-Touch Ministries", Dr Stanley, First Baptist,Atlanta, or any other evangelical TV minister.

Additionally, God gives each one of us gifts and if we're not meeting with other believers, how are we to use those gifts to bless the saints?

And that's why the "universal church" is pretty much useless. It can't assemble, can't evangelize, can't worship. Only the local church is uniquely designed to carry out the Great Commission.

    Tom...

The Universal Church is all of the believers world wide.

    Your kidding...right?

Gathering takes place all the time. Sundays, Thursdays, and sometimes other days. Sometimes in a "church" building and sometimes anywhere else.

Nonsense. People can be drawn to Christ after hearing the gospel in a gathered assembly, and people can be drawn to Christ by hearing the gospel on a street corner.

Ridiculous. I have worsgipped God during church worship services...and I have also worshipped God by myself looking at one of His magnificent sunsets.

No...the local church is an important part of his kingdom here on earth, but evangelism, worship, etc can take place in, or independant of, a local assembly.

Today, in my cab I had two customers. The lady was Church of the Nazarene, the man was a non Christian.

Even though the lady and myself are not members of the same church, united in Christ (universal church) we were able to carry out the Great commission to the man riding with us. Often, I have a Christian riding (alone) with me, and we are able to fellowship in the Lord.

I am a very strong supporter of the local church, but my relationship with other Christians can be just as important, for Christian fellowship, prayer partners and ect.

You're confusing that with the kingdom.

Yes. The church assembles. It has pastors, deacons, teachers, etc. Who is the pastor of the Universal Church?

I agree. Never contended anything differently. Now, do you encourage new converts to join a local Baptist church? Do they get their Bible teaching from the Universal Church?

Me, too. How does this relate to this conversation?

Again, you're confusing the church and the kingdom. They are not the same. The local church is not part of the kingdom. Jesus died for the local church (Acts 20:28) Paul, whose missionary journeys were under the auspices of a local church (Antioch), described the congregation at Corinth as the church (I Cor 12:27) The ordinances were committed to the local church (I Cor 11:1)

The proper question is not, does evangelism take place independently of the local church. It is, should it.

So, how many missionaries has the Universal Church sent? When was the last offering it took? Just exactly what does the U-Church DO to justify its existence, if it exists?
